Nuclear sustainment is top priority
Published: March 10, 2009

ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga., March 10 (UPI) -- The commander of the
U.S. Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center said robust nuclear sustainment
is critical and a top priority.

Brig. Gen. Everett Thomas, commander of the Air Force Materiel Command
Nuclear Weapons Center in New Mexico, said in order to effectively
support U.S. military objectives, an efficient and sustained nuclear
enterprise must remain in focus, the Materiel Command reported.

Thomas said nuclear sustainment, following the 2007 incident when six
cruise missiles with nuclear warheads were mistakenly transported
without proper safeguards, requires proper attention to provide
"war-winning capabilities to the war fighter," according to a press
release.

"It's Air Force Materiel Command's mission to sustain our nuclear
force," Thomas said in the release.

"It's up to us to keep it a priority and make sure we don't slip back
to the days when we did not pay the proper amount of attention to our
nuclear mission."
