Massive Final Act of the World March for Peace and Nonviolence
Argentina Punta de Vacas | January 03, 2010 08:37

After traveling 200 thousand kilometers, the international team of the World March arrived today, January 2, at the Park of Study and Reflection Punta de Vacas in Argentina. Close to 20,000 people heard the representatives of the World March from Chile, Argentina, India, Italy, the Philippines, Spain and England that circled the globe calling for nuclear disarmament.

The final destination of the World March for Peace and Nonviolence was the Park of Study and Reflection Punta de Vacas, located in the mountains on the border between Chile and Argentina.

This first World March has been “the largest manifestation for the Peace and Nonviolence in history and the first at a planetary scale,” according to its coordinators. Those gathered for the event heard from the activists who have traveled the globe spreading the March`s message.

At 18 hours Rafael de la Rubia, the international spokesperson for the initiative, began his testimony: “This March is a demonstration effect, building upon other great transformative actions of humanity.” The event was held in the same place where the March was launched in November 2008, in the Symposium of the World Center of Humanist Studies.

Hundreds of thousands of people have participated in the march, as have more than three thousand organizations and a group of almost 100 marchers, forming different base teams that carried out four distinct routes: intercontinental, Middle East, the Balkans, and Southeast Africa. In their trajectory they passed through more than 400 cities in 90 countries and have traveled close to 200 thousand kilometers during 93 days.

In their journey through these countries, the marchers have been received by the Secretary-General of the UN, Ban Ki-Moon, by Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, national presidents, parliamentarians, and hundreds of mayors. But the reception has also been popular; two examples were the 80,000 youth who greeted the international base team in a concert in Chile and 12,000 school children in the Philippines who formed a giant peace sign, among many other massive events.

Regarding the daily lives of the marchers, the accommodations were at times comfortable but other times austere: the marchers slept in Buddhist monasteries, makeshift homes, and even in a fallout shelter. There were threats of a tsunami, earthquakes, and typhoons, and they marched in temperatures ranging from 40 degrees to below zero.

During the tour, they encountered people made homeless by typhoons in the Philippines, Hibakushas, or survivors of the Hiroshima bomb, and millions of families torn apart by wars in Korea and Palestine. They visited memorials to the millions who died in wars in Europe and Asia, places where torture is still being carried out, and witnessed the border conflicts between India and Pakistan, Israel and Palestine, within the Balkans, and in Tijuana, at the border between the United States and Mexico.

They saw children working in Asia, Africa and America, and battered women worldwide. "On the journey, everything has happened to us, including moments of great meaning, where the demands of the past converged with the aspirations of the future. Moments of a connection with the people that allowed us to communicate with them, surpassing languages, cultures, races and beliefs," said de la Rubia, who is also coordinator of the international association World Without Wars and Without Violence, the convener of the march.

Gemma Suzara of the Philippines relayed her experience with the March: “it is one experience that I will remember for the rest of my life …the giant peace sign created by thousands of school children lead me to think that if we really work together as one body and we believe in ourselves, we can surpass any limit.”

Bhairavi Sagar, from India, who traveled with the team through Europe, Africa and the Americas, explained in her testimony “Being born in the country of the Father of Nonviolence - Mahatma Gandhi – a man, who dedicated his life so that our country achieved freedom and because of whom I am standing here today as a free unchained human being. Now, it is my turn to give now to the future generations – to put in my bit to leave a world worth living for them in dignity and happiness”.

Tony Robinson from the UK who traveled through 30 countries spoke from the heart and said “in Japan we met the Hibakushas, the survivors of the atomic bomb. One of them said to us: Thank you, thank you. This is so important!” I was translating her words while I was trying not to break into tears because of the strong empathy I felt with the terrible suffering that this woman had lived through and with the feeling of not being worthy of her gratitude.

The speeches went on and Giorgio Schultze, European spokesperson of the World March and member of the Middle East and the Balkans teams, said: “We crossed the wall that divides Israel from Palestine and now more than 200 social leaders, veterans of Al Fatah, are asking us to help them build a nonviolent army that might communicate and open the doors towards reconciliation and start a new history of peaceful coexistence between Palestinians and Jews”. The event finished with the words of Tomas Hirsch, Latin-American spokesperson of the World March, who mainly spoke about the future of the Humanist Movement, the organization that propelled the World March.

Shortly after 7:30 pm, when the sun had slipped behind the mountains of the Andes Range, the event finished with the greeting of “Peace, Force and Joy” of all those present.

Dear Friends! This could be interesting for us humanists. I am forwarding John Lannon's e-mail , an endorsed human rights and peace activist and the spokesperson of Shannonwatch that also endorsed the march. \big hug Krisztina
International Hunger Strike Press Release

Sunday December 27th marks the anniversary of the attack on Gaza by Israel, which left over 1,400 people dead, and over 5,000 injured in 22 days.
At 11 35 am, the time of the first attack, a group of humanitarians on the “Viva Palestina Convoy” will embark on an International Hunger Strike in the main square in Aqaba, Jordan.

The International Hunger Strike will aim to highlight the ongoing illegal siege imposed on Gaza, and to remember the victims of the attacks who died during the 22 day bombardment by Israel.

This International Hunger Strike will also highlight the refusal by Egypt, under Israeli pressure, to allow the humanitarian aid to reach the people in Gaza. The convoy has been stranded in the city for 3 days now, having been refused permission to enter Egypt on their way to Gaza. There are 500 people from no less than 20 different countries in 250 vehicles loaded with charitable humanitarian aid. The convoy is been led by leading international politician George Galloway, having left London on December 6th.

Embarking on the International Hunger Strike are 15 people from different continents across the world. Among those taking part are Fatima Mohammidi from the United States, John Hurson and Caoimhe Butterly from Ireland, Ahasan Shamruk from Palestine, Nidal Hajaj, Hanan Chehata and Mohammed Shakiel from England, plus Kamal Mashni from Australia among others.

Each day, 15 more people from the convoy will join in the International Hunger Strike, and they will go without food until the convoy is allowed to enter safely into Egypt, and through the Rafah border to Gaza.

Speaking from Aqaba, Ahasan Shamruk, said, “I am joining this Hunger Strike to draw attention to the fact that the siege is a form of collective, sustained, and devastating punishment of 1.5 million civilian people. As we commemorate the first year anniversary of the massacres, it is important to remember, that for my brothers and sisters living under siege in Gaza, the war has not ended.”

John Hurson, from Tyrone, who travelled on the first “Viva Palestinan Convoy”, decided to join the International Hunger Strike to draw attention to the fact that nothing has changed in the past year following the attacks.
John said, “from my time spent in Gaza, to think that in the year 2009, people are denied all the basic essentials in life, like water, electricity, medicine, blankets, books, and even footballs for the children, is just unbelievable and unacceptable.

“For Egypt to prevent this compassionate and charitable aid, donated by ordinary caring people from all over the world, unnnecessarily adds to the hardships currently endured on a daily basis, by the besieged and distressed people in Gaza.

I am hopeful that the leaders of the West will exert their influence, put pressure on Egypt, the United States, and Israel to end this inhuman blockade forced upon Gaza, and allow for the safe passage of this essential humanitarian aid. Enough is enough, this has to end now, for the sake of humanity.”

HankyorehLink1,000 attend Christmas mass for Yongsan tragedy victims:
Lawmakers join the Catholic Priests’ Association for Justice in a special prayer for a resolution to this tragedy
Posted on Dec. 26, 2009

It’s Christmas. Rain falls at the scene of the Yongsan Tragedy in Hangangno 2-ga located in Seoul’s Yongsan neighborhood.

On this day, the Catholic Priests’ Association for Justice held a special mass for life and peace with the victims of the fire. The silent prayers of an estimated 1,000 people who braved the rain filled the alley next to the Namildang Building.

Portraits of individuals who were killed in the fire on Jan. 20 as they resisted evictions, demolition and subsequent police crackdown were placed next to the manger of the Baby Jesus. After mass, attendees sang “Silent Night” and laid flowers in front of the five portraits of Yang Hee-seong, Yun Yong-heon, Lee Sang-nim, Lee Seong-su and Han Dae-seong.

It does not seem possible that 340 days have passed. The color has begun to fade from the banners and signs that accompanied the lonely struggle. Yet the families of the victims, who sat in the first row of the mass, have not yet been able take off their mourning clothes.

The cloudy sky began sprinkling rain from the time the widow of Lee Seong-su, Kwon Myeong-suk, took the rostrum to greet the participants. Kwon said, “It seems the martyrs are sad, too, as on Christmas, which should be a time of congratulations and enjoyment, we would have eaten together had they been alive...” The bereaved families’ wiped their faces with wrinkled hand towels in response to her words.

Recent memorial masses for Yongsan victims have been attended by some several dozen people, but this Christmas mass at the site of the Yongsan tragedy gathered a crowd of close to 1,000. Former Democratic Party Chairman Sohn Hak-kyu, New Progressive Party Chairman Roh Hoe-chan, and independent Lawmaker Chung Dong-young and DP Lawmaker Song Young-gil took part in the mass.

Father Peter Lee Kang-suh, director of the Catholic Urban Poor Pastoral Committee of Seoul archdiocese, who performed the final prayers as the head of the day’s ceremony, asked, “Do you know why they place Baby Jesus in the manger?” Father Peter went on to say, “He was born in a manger because nobody else would take in even a pregnant woman since all the other houses were full of people. Some 2,000 years ago, the poor and powerless were unable to live in homes worthy of them and were driven out to live in the homes of beasts like today.”

Pressing the government to resolve the tragedy and to take an interest in the people, Father Lee said the Christmas mass was not the end. He also said that masses would be held every day at the Namildang Building until the tragedy is resolved. Since late March, the Catholic Priests' Association for Justice has hung up banners at the site and conducted memorial masses every day. In addition, Buddhist and Protestant human rights groups have also come to the site to spend time with the bereaved.

Despite their efforts, the situation appears far from finding a resolution. Prosecutors have chosen to only indict the protestors for their involvement in the events surrounding the Yongsan tragedy, and they have yet to release some 3,000 pages of notes dealing with their investigation of the police command's actions. On Oct. 28, the Court handed down heavy sentences of 5 years to 6 years each to seven of the nine former tenants, who were indicted despite the Court's instruction to prosecutors to hand over their notes.

Although winter has once again appeared on the streets, the hearts of the bereaved continue to burn just prior to the one-year anniversary of the tragedy. Kwon said the thing she is most afraid of is that this will all be forgotten as people are visiting the site of the Yongsan tragedy less in the heart of winter. The bodies of the victims are still awaiting proper funerals and when they might be released from the freezer of the morgue in Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital, nobody knows.

 Prime Minister,

Thank your for acceding to our request and receiving a delegation of
the World March for Peace and Nonviolence during our journey through Japan.

This is an initiative of the humanist organisation, World without Wars
and without Violence and counts on the support of over 2000
organisations and numerous personalities around the world, including
eight Heads of State, 11 former Presidents, numerous Nobel Peace
Laureates and important personalities and international associations
in all fields of human endeavour.

The March started in New Zealand on the 2nd of October 2009, a date
that commemorates the birth of Gandhi, “International Day of Nonviolence”.
We have already passed through 9 countries; New Zealand, Australia,
Malaysia, Philippines, Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Korea and Japan. In
Hiroshima we were presented with the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Protocol for
the total elimination of nuclear weapons throughout the world. We are
officially incorporating this document into the WM.

After Asia, the WM will pass through the other five continents and
culminate in Argentina on the 2nd of January 2010.

Japan, which has been the only country to suffer a nuclear attack, has the
greatest moral authority to call for the total abandonment of nuclear weapons.
In addition article 9 of the Japanese Constitution recognises that war is not
the best way to resolve conflicts between countries and is a model that we
 are proposing to other Governments.

From the World March Coordination Committee we call on the Japanese
Government to represent the true sentiment of the majority of her
citizens and advance three initiatives at an international level:

 ・the elimination of nuclear weapons;
・the renunciation of war as a means to resolve conflicts at the same
time as stridently defending article 9 from attack from those who
  wish to eliminate it;
・and the closure of foreign bases that are maintained on the territory
  of other nations.

Please find with this letter the Manifesto of the World March in our

Dear Katsuya Okada, Minister of Foreign Affairs

I am a Korean and I am writing this for supporting the Japanese citizens’
peaceful opposition of the 'Basic Plan on Space' in 2009 and their rightly
persistent effort for keeping space for peace.

When I heard in May that the once-abandoned GX rocket in consideration
was to be developed by the Japan's industrial-military complex and that
the US industrial-military complex was pushing its development behind it,
I was quite upset and furious. Thanks to my Japanese friend, I got
the news and have sent the similar letter to the Japanese authority
through my friend like this at the time as well.

It was a beyond imagination that the US industrial-military Complex even
wanted the GX rocket to be launched in the Vandenberg Space Command
which was infamous representing one of the core U.S. Space war systems.

By luring the Japanese military industrial complex which had been ready to
openly launch its greed into that decoy with the vicious 'Basic Law on Space'
in 2008, The U.S. military industrial seemed to have decided to accelerate
the integration of the whole space war system in the Asia pacific area.

It would not only increase the tension in the area but would inevitably
destroy the peace mechanism in that area where the total military
budget by the United States, China, Russia, Japan and both Korea
has already been more than 70 % of the total world military budget.

It should be a concern to many people not only in Japan and Vandenberg
but also in Korea and other Asia countries who have been in vigil against
the resurrection of the Japanese militarism and imperialism.

As a Korean, it was heard also as threat for the prospect of the peaceful
reunification of Korea since with the Japan’s closer integration to
the U.S space war system, the more possibility of tension and wars
could also be predicted in Korea, the crossing zone.

It was also heard as part of the ever strengthening of the US-Japan-SK
military alliance which would not only destabilize the region but also
anticipate more suffering of the people in the region behind its surface.

Under the current right wing government, Lee, Myung-Bak regime,
South Korea has rapidly been being integrated into the US-led Missile
Defense system. While it promotes its more aggressive space policy,
selling it as “civilian mission” to the public, it is obvious that it has
the dual mission including the military’s and one of its effects is
to increase the military tension in the Asia Pacific. Not to mention,
it is with the blood-tearful cost of the South Korean people’s suffering
who are opposing all that US military expansion in the South Korea and
 South Korea’s subjugation into it.

Recently, one farmer, Nam, Chang-Hee in Ohyun-ri, 46, who has been

the Jeju naval base, as a part of the US Military strategy would be set

endure the tragic psychological division of village. The Kunsan air base
is expanding at the cost of the villages which would be demolished and
the command of the Songtan Air base, Pyeongtaek is to be renamed
as the “Korea Air and Space Command” which would ensure the United
States’ control of the South Korea Air Force’s war time operational
right. at the cost of the sovereignty of Korea.

It is heard that the Japan is the country which has had the most
Progressive space principle in 1969 which promotes for peace in space
but now in danger of being nullified by the emergence of the Japanese
military Industrial complex. The principle has to be widely shared and
kept by all the peace-loving people in the world with the Article 9 where
the Japan truly stands on and represents its peaceful heart.

The Japanese people deserve to live in peace, not under the threat of
the military industrial complex which would eventually rob of their rights
for decent welfare and for living in peace. We, Koreans support all the
efforts by the peace-loving Japanese friends to stop the madness and
to stand for Justice with the people in the world. We do this because
peace of the Japan greatly encourage South Korean’s struggle against

DAVID SWANSON REVIEWS MY BOOK - THANKS DAVID
Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009

By David Swanson http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/

If you have an interest in grassroots organizing, international alliance building, the peace movement, the labor movement, the conversion of the U.S. economy from weapons to human needs, the preservation of life on earth (come on, admit it), the weaponization of space, or the autobiographical insights of smart and determined people, then I cannot more strongly recommend that you get a copy of "Come Together Right Now: Organizing Stories from a Fading Empire," by my friend and ally Bruce Gagnon.

Gagnon provides further confirmation of Randy Shaw's thesis in "Beyond the Fields," that the best organizers come out of the United Farm Workers. Gagnon got his training as an organizer working for the UFW in Florida after having grown up Republican, joined the military, and then been reached and persuaded by the peace movement. Gagnon later came to the decision that organizing the poor to demand basic needs was the uphill struggle it was, at least in part, because those with power were directing too many of our resources into wars and militarization. Gagnon became a leader of the peace movement in Florida, and then the leader of an international network of activists called the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space.

I was privileged to participate in the Global Network's annual conference last year in Omaha, Nebraska. And just this month Bruce and I spoke at a rally in Maine, where he has made his home for several years. Bruce's book is part autobiography, but it is made up largely of articles and reports and diary entries and even a play that he wrote during the past 20-some years.

These thoughts of an activist and an organizer, as he was thinking them, presented here in chronological order tell a wonderful personal story, but also a story of where our country and world have gone. In early descriptions of campaigns we see Gagnon and his allies able to make use of "mainstream" media outlets. Fourteen years ago he already had a crystal clear grasp on how Washington, D.C., corrupted movements, and he was proposing that all social justice movements get out of that town and engage in grassroots organizing and educating. But he made no mention of investing in communications media. In contrast, five years ago, Bruce was writing about two strategies:

"work hard to reach people by speaking to them directly; and utilize mass communications where possible. When mainstream media is not available to us, create our own and promote it widely."

I recommend visiting the Global Network's website and assisting in that project. Figures in Bruce's book suggest that the United States is spending at least $70 billion a year (as of four years ago, no doubt higher now) on military space development.

"Queen Isabella," Gagnon writes, "began the 100-year process of building the Spanish Armada after Columbus' 'successful' return voyage from the Americas. Spain's naval armada helped create a global war system, that we suffer from today, as all the European powers were soon building navies to 'compete' for control and domination of the sea lanes for resources and markets."

Gagnon suggests that debating whether so-called "missile defense," the offensive intentions of which he documents, can ever work misses the larger view. We are "debating the size of the cannon balls on the Spanish armada ships rather than discussing the long-term implications of creating a new arms race in the heavens." Whether or not "missile defense" ever works, Gagnon writes, it has "already allowed the Pentagon and the aerospace industry to move tens of billions of dollars into research and development programs for space offensive warfare."

According to NASA's director in 2005 Mike Griffin, "For America to continue to be preeminent among nations, it is necessary for us to be the preeminent space-faring nation."

But we are not preeminent in raising life expectancy or lowering infant mortality. We're nowhere near preeminent in reducing poverty or achieving an environmentally sustainable economy or lifestyle. We have no preeminence in educational achievements. Preeminence in job security, limited work hours, paid leave, healthcare, family stability, community support, quality of life, and happiness all belong to other nations. Yet we've given such massive secret unaccountable budgets to the military that a movie in theaters now depicts, in a not entirely fictionalized manner, a program in which people were trained in skills as stupid and fantastical as staring at a goat until it dies -- a program that referred to its trainees as Jedi, clearly influenced by someone having viewed the movie "Star Wars."

Bruce Gagnon's book and his life are models of how, on every level, we can shift our priorities to what, in contrast to Star Wars, we might call earth lives. (Gagnon's book was updated and republished in 2008.)

David Swanson is the author of the new book "Daybreak: Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union" by Seven Stories Press. You can order it and find out when tour will be in your town: http://davidswanson.org/book.

Text Fwd: SAY NO TO LOTTE

Campsite on overlook of Gyeyang mountain

SAY NO TO LOTTE

Welcome to Lotte World. Lotte Group, a major South Korean corporation, has their hands in many things. Cookies, real estate, golf courses, electronics, hotels, baseball teams in Korea and Japan, heavy chemicals, financial services and more. In all the Lotte Corporation has 60 distinct business units.

You might recall my blog post ,while I was in Incheon during my recent trip, about meeting a local minister who sat in a tree house in the woods for 155 days in protest of the Lotte Corporation's plan to tear up the Gyeyang Mountain, the highest mountain around Incheon with many rare plants and animals. Lotte wants to build a world class golf course for the rich.

For several years the pertinent government agencies would not give Lotte Group permission to bulldoze the mountain. Then 2MB (also called the bulldozer) got elected president, recall that I said he is married into the Lotte family, and everything changed.

Today 55 organizations in Incheon are organizing to stop this destruction of one of the few remaining wilderness areas around the sprawling city. They have undertaken a rolling fast to help build opposition. People do a hunger strike for 24 hours and go into the mountain and sleep in a tent.

Before I left Incheon my host Sung-Hee Choi signed up to strike on October 29 and I agreed to join her in solidarity. Since they are one-day ahead of us in South Korea, her action is already done. I've just begun mine and will not eat until 9:00 am on Friday morning. Not a huge sacrifice but the folks there issued a news release yesterday proclaiming they now had international support and participation. I am glad to help a bit.

Everywhere in South Korea that I turned I saw signs of the Lotte Corporation. All big corporations seem to be imperialists these days. They want to take over the whole world, including the trees and the plants. The least I can do is to help say no.
