Text fwd:Maine Veterans for Peace for the Veterans for Peace, ROK

Image source: Bruce Gagnon sent above with the quoted text below on Sept. 19, 2009

The standing man in the leftist is Tom Sturtevant, a leader of the Maine chapter, VFP, who has presented the U. S. Veterans for Peace banner to the Veterans for Peace, South Korea last April during the GN conference from April 16 to 18. Bruce Gagnon has delivered it on behalf of him to the latter on his visit to its office, Seoul, on Aug. 20, 2009. In exchange, Veterans for Peace, ROK, gave Gagnon its banner that its members used to bring into the peace protests. The small letters in the upper side says, ‘Army for Nation, Democracy and Peaceful Unification’ (See the related blogs below).

'Dear Friends:

Last weekend our Maine Veterans for Peace Chapter had a meeting and I presented your banner to them. They were very happy to receive the banner and proud that we have made connection with you. In our group we have WW II veterans, Korean war veterans and Vietnam veterans.

It was the Maine chapter that founded national Veterans for Peace 24 years ago.

As I told you we will host the national convention in 2010 and we hope you will be able to send representatives to that meeting.

I will return to South Korea on Oct 6 for two weeks. I hope we have a chance to meet again.'

KOREAN ACTIVISTS ARRESTED FOR DESIRING REUNIFICATION OF THEIR COUNTRY

Please let me know if you'd like your name (and/or organization) added to the following statement in support of six South Korean activists who were arrested by their right-wing government on May 7 for their efforts to publicly support the reunification of South and North Korea. One of the activists, Choi, Eun-A was on the Korean organizing committee that did such a wonderful job of hosting our Global Network space organizing conference last month in Seoul.

Send me an email at globalnet@mindspring.com if you would like to be listed on the statement which we will send to the South Korean United Nations Mission early this week. Be sure to include your city/state and country.

STATEMENT CALLING FOR RELEASE OF SOUTH KOREAN REUNIFICATION ACTIVISTS

We, the undersigned, are outraged to hear about the May 7, 2009 arrests and detention of six South Korean reunification activists by their government under the “National Security Law”.

Lee, Kyu-Jae; Lee, Kyeong-Won; Jang, [Min]-Kyeong; Yoon, Joo-Hyung; Oh, Soon-Wan, and Choi, Eun-A should be released immediately and a public apology should be given to these peaceful activists, to their families, and to the people of South and North Korea.

It is our understanding that for many years the Pan-Korean Alliance for Reunification (PKAR) has worked openly to create peaceful dialogue between South and North Korea with the hopes of bringing the country together again in a positive way. We applaud their efforts.

The time has come to end the mindless militarism that continues to divide the Korean peninsula. Those people who work to that end should be applauded for their efforts, not arrested and treated with such humiliation.

11 year old son's letter to his beloved arrested father on the Parents' Day

South Korean branch, Pan-Korean Alliance for Reunification (PKAR)

Kang is a 11 year old son of Mr. Lee, Kyeong-Won, the arrested on May 7, 2009 when there was the NIS raid. Before the news that all the six were decided to be placed under restraint was known, he had written to his beloved dad, praying for the release of his father. The below is the English translation of his letter above.

"Beloved Dad,

I had prepared the [paper] carnation [I made] (photo above) and written the letter for you yesterday but was sad because I could not give you them. Only if you had been with me, you would hug me, with a wide smile…I am really sad.
I am thinking of how good it would be if you are released soon because I am sad to think that you were arrested. The reason is because I feel it as more severe suffering than operation. While operation will be painful just several times, the pain by your restraint will be continuously remained* . However, if you are released soon on the contrary, pain will be decreased and the joy will greatly fill me. I desperately hope you and mom are with me. Because I am afraid that your emptiness would be felt so big whenever there is family vacation and I am afraid that I would be so envy of other friends. I want to have a meal with you, hug and play with you. So that is why I so pray that you will not be under restraint.

Thinking of you,

Kang"

Lee, Kang, 11 year old son of Mr. Lee, Kyeong-Won who are among the 6 arrested on May 7. wrote the letter to his father on the same day, upon his arrest. It was right before the Parents' Day, May 8 in the South Korea. He made a paper carnation himself for his father. Below is the Korean translation of his letter above.

“Dear Dad, I was quite surprised that the police was arresting you in the morning. I somehow expected that it would happen someday but did not know it could be today. I pretended to be sober but cried in my bed, thinking how they dare to arrest my dad just because of the fact that you did rally. I want to see you as soon as possible. I will study with mom the National Security Law while you are not here. And could you please receive my carnation, yes? If you are in the court, I and mom will be the witness for you. Dad, See you later, then. LOVE ★★★★★ You should really read this.

Your beloved son
Lee, Kang’

ABOLISH THE NATIONAL SECURITY LAW!!!!!
STOP THE OPPRESSION AGAINST THE PEACEFUL UNIFICATION MOVEMENTS!!!!!

Choi, Eun-A, 36, a member of the Korea organizing committee for the International Conference against the Asia Pacific Missile Defense and for the End of Arms Race, April 16 to 18, 2009 was arrested by the National Intelligence Service(NIS) on May 7 with other 5 people(Lee, Kyu-Jae; Lee, Kyeong-Won; Jang, Min*-Kyeong; Yoon, Joo-Hyung; Oh, Soon-Wan) viciously charged in violation of the National Security Law (specifically under the titles of so called 'communication with enemy', 'enemy-benefiting activities'). It was exactly one day before the Parents' Day(like Mother's Day and Father's day), in the South Korea.

Choi, Eun-A, belong to the Self-Reliance Reunification Committee, Korean Alliance for Progressive Movement was a facilitator for the ‘welcome and keynote Speech’ on April 17 symposium. She also edited for the reference material for the trips for the DMZ vicinity, Pyeongtaek and Mugeon-ri, during the conference.

She has also worked in the South Korean branch, Pan-Korean Alliance for Reunification (PKAR).

The 6 arrested have been investigated by the NIS since their being arrested and it is known that they were decided at 2 am, today, May 9 to be placed under restraint. During the investigation, they were only allowed to see the families for the 2nd and last day.

It is heard that the PKAR, set up in 1991, as a part of the efforts for reconciliation and solidarity among the South Koreans, North Koreans and Korean residents in the foreign countries, have openly worked regarding all the works for the self-reliance, peaceful reunification of Korea, openly publicizing all the results of the meetings with the North Korea thru fax. Furthermore, it is heard that the PKAR has even been the breakthrough by the request of the South Korean government when the relationship between the SK and NK was blocked.

Even though the PKAR was maliciously labeled by then right wing South Korean government in 1995 as the so-called 'enemy (North Korea)- benefiting' organization, the sequential governments have not mattered it at all, especially since the first historical summit meeting between Kim, Jong-Il(NK) and Kim, Dae-Joong(SK) on June 15, 2000 which established the first separate family meetings and other peaceful reconciliation efforts since then.

The Korea organizing committee for the Seoul conference is furious by the unusal raid of the National Intelligence Service and the South Korean government who intends to crack down the peaceful reunification movements in the South Korea for the interest of the current unpopular Lee Myung Bak administration who has severely oppressed the civil rights since its launch including the Yongsan crackdown and other peace movements.

The May 7 accident reminds the military dictatorship period in the 80s. It is heard that the 3 in Seoul*were not in the custody but in the Seoul Detention Center worse than custody during the investigation, which is illegal. And it is heard that even before the realization of the restraint warrant inspection, the prison number was given to each of them. All the revealed facts show that the whole process was at the violation of human rights. It is heard that the 6 are physically O.K. but we will not be sure until everything is cleared.

*apology for fix: 3 in the Chungjoo City were later known to be not in this case(Fix date: May 12, 2009 by the No Base Stories of Korea) Otherwise, Choi, Eun-A is heard to have used the right of keeping silent by now. The Chairman is suffering for his age and health. Practically they could not see even their family, by now(addition date: May 13, 2009 by the No Base Stories of Korea)

The Pan-Korean committee against the oppression of the unification movements in the South Korea and for the release of the six, composed of the various organizations and citizens will meet soon early next week. We will desperately need your solidarity for the survival of the peaceful reunification movements in the South Korea and for the release of the dear colleagues, including Eun-A. Please help us to spread the news. We will need all the international campaigns including the petition for the Amnesty International next week and afrer.

We will keep to update the news.

Thanks very much.

Report from Hamamatsu, Japan, on AWACS and PAC-3

  1. Ten Years Since the Array of AWACS
In 1998 and 1999, four AWACS, Airborne Warning and Control System, were arrayed at the Hamamatsu Air Base of the Japan Air Self Defense Force, the JASDF. Ten years later, in May 2008, PAC-3, Patriot Advanced Capability, was arrayed at the Hamamatsu Air Base.

We are going to take a look at the military movement in Hamamatsu in these ten years. In 1999, together with the array of AWACS, the Exhibition “Museum” of the JASDF was constructed at the Hamamatsu Air Base, and the aerial acrobatics by Blue Impulse, (which were discontinued after its crash in 1982), was resumed. In 2000, AWACS was used in the Japan-America United Exercise, and was dispatched exercises in Alaska. It was also used to watch the Korean Peninsula, the World Cup, and the Summit in Toyako.

After the Iraq War broke out in 2003, the Japanese government dispatched the JSDF there. The C-130 at the Komaki Air Base was painted blue at the Hamamatsu Air Base to make it difficult to be seen in the Iraqi air. Troops were dispatched to Iraq 33 times from the Hamamatsu Air Base; the total number was 122. One of the troops who had returned from Iraq committed suicide because of the harassment within the troops, and the bereaved brought a lawsuit against the JSDF in 2008.

Thus, Hamamatsu has become the Japanese stronghold for dispatching troops. At the same time, however, there have been movements for recovering human rights.

As well as the anti-war movement, investigations have been made on the war-time bombings of Asian countries, war-time poison gas training in Hamamatsu, and the war-time historic sites in Hamamatsu. There has been a new discovery about the bombings. For example, the Japan Army School had researched on bombing with poison gas in Chichiharu, and its research and training were directly used in the real battle; even now its abandoned bombs are causing harm on humans there.

Recently the United States has been ruling over space and urging the global war. It is the missile defense system and PAC-3 that support “the preemptive attack.” PAC-3 was secretly arrayed in the Hamamatsu Air Base in May, 2008. It was after the array that the official announcement was made to citizens. In the Hamamatsu Air Base there are anti-aircraft artillery training teams, AAA, and maintenance teams, so the arrayed PAC-3 is for training and maintenance. In September of last year, PAC-3 from the Hamamatsu Air Base was used for a test launching in the White-Sons Launching Site in New Mexico.

Some citizens’ groups in the Tokai Region (Nagoya, Gifu, Mie, and Hamamatsu) formed a network against the array of PAC-3 in February, 2009. In the middle of the night in late Feb. 2009, PAC-3 was secretly arrayed from Mitsubishi Heavy Industry, the company that is licensed to produce PAC-3, to Gifu Base, guarded by 300 policemen. In late March, 2009, the Japanese Government announced preemptive destruction order of the “satellite” launched from North Korea, and PAC-3 from the Hamamatsu Air Base was arrayed for this in the Tohoku region in the north part of Japan.

In a real battle, PAC-3 is used under the united-command of Japan and the US which rules the space. Such usage of PAC-3 is in violation of Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution which prohibits collective defense and warfare. It is true that the real target of PAC-3 is Article 9. We are living in such a dangerous situation. However, to change our time from out of global war to out of global peace, we would like to learn from history and pursue such movements as to prevent Hamamatsu from becoming a military stronghold ever again.

  1. The Movement of PAC-3 in Hamamatsu Air Base after the Invocation of MD in 2009
The Aso Administration announced “preventative destruction order” on March 27 in reaction to the launching of a ‘satellite’ by Korea. It was to array the MD unit for ‘interception’, which meant the destruction of the pacifism of the Japanese Constitution by the Japanese government.

On March 19, Hamamatsu Air Base announced notification of the passing of PAC-3 related vehicles to Iwate, Akita, and Hamamatsu City. Akita Prefecture received the announcement on 23rd, and on 26th the paper reported, ‘it was for training the unit.’ PAC-3 was carried out from the Hamamatsu Air Base at 7:00 a.m. A convoy, whose members were in camouflage fatigues, came out of its north gate, protected by police. Four units with 50 vehicles headed for the Shimizu Port by way of the Tomei Highway, and sailed for Tohoku on a ferry named Daiichi-Ariake-maru which belonged to a private company. We had a protest against it at Hamamatsu Air Base. We also went to city hall on the 30th to request that Mayor also oppose this movement.

On March 26th, one day before the preventative destruction order, a small jet flew to the Hamamatsu Air Base with some senior members of the JSDF. They may have come to Hamamatsu to prepare for arraying PAC-3. This means they had prepared for arraying PAC-3 before the preventative destruction order.

AWACS, incorporated in the MD system, repeated watching on the Korean Peninsula. The main strategy of contemporary global war is hegemony of space, the preventative first strikes, missile defense, intelligence war, and creating wartime in peacetime. The recent movements have shown the same objectives: based on the information from US satellites, the Japanese government formed the united operational headquarters with the US, invoked MD, operated an intelligence war in the name of ‘missile’ defense, and created wartime in peacetime.

Stirring ‘the missile crisis’, the Aso administration invoked MD. This shows the fragile nature of the Aso administration which easily responds to crisis. The Defense Ministry made a blunder of issuing false information of the North Korean ‘launching’. In the metropolitan area PAC-3 was arrayed to guard mainly the Defense Ministry. These facts show that MD is useless, and that PAC-3 is for guarding not citizens but military strongholds like Ichigaya, Asaka, and Narashino, and that the PAC-3 arrayed in the Tohoku region was only a varnish.

There is a mystery. When PAC-3 was arrayed at the Hamamatsu Air Base, the JSDF explained it was only for training, and that they would not array the warhead. Where did the warhead of PAC-3 come from that was arrayed in Tohoku region?

Great thanks to Mr. Sin, In Sig/ Daejeon, Korea/ Preparatory committee for the Reunification Public Party, as well, who uploaded the sign request email to the people’s discussion section of Hankyeoreh, one of the major newspapers in the South Korea and made by people’s power itself. He also forwarded the email to his many friends including the influential former politician and humaniteian medical doctorsin the South Korea for two days. Thanks very much.

Thanks very much to Makiko Sato, Japan and Lindis Percy, UK and Bruce Gagnon, U.S. A., Global Network against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space for all your encouraging and kind comments, as well.

In case, Macgregor is arrested, we, Koreans will far-spread the news of it. The list will be increased.

2. Koreans' solidarity statement & Sign for Macgregor Eddy and May 5 vandenberg protest [

Dear friends, it is sent to many Koreans and international friends.

It is a solidarity statement(in English and Korean) and sign(from May 1 to May 4) by about 186 Koreans and Korean residents in the foreign countries regarding Macgregor Eddy and her colleagues’ Vandenberg protest on May 05, 2009. She and her colleague would protest at 1pm on the day against the launch of the Star War satellite at the Vandenberg Space Command.

I am thankful to everyone who signed to it. Many students, workers and activists were enthusiastic to sign it. I especially thank to Mr. Kim, Sung-Hwan, representative of Samsung General Group Union and Mr. Joo, Byung-Joon, Chairman, Ohyun-ri Villiage People’s Committee against the Expansion of the Mugeon-ri Military Training Fields, who mobilized the signs among the workers and village people. I am also thankful to Ms. Kim, Chun-Hee, a Korean American, who forwarded this to her family and friends. Great thanks to Suziehaeng, Life and Peace Association, as well, for her forward to collegues. Finally my great thanks goes to Ms. Bang, Ae-Ja, Yebada Self-support Center for the Disabled, Pyeongtaek. I was very much moved by the Disabled who gathered at May 1 rally. They were very enthusiastic for sign despite their hands and mouth were not free. I believe there are huge Koreans who would strongly support Eddy and protest on May 5, only if they had been informed this sign movement.

We, all send Macgregor Eddy and her colleagues best warm wishes!

* I wanted to send at midnight but two persons were missed in the list so I had to check the lists again. Sorry about it.

Solidarity Statement & petition for
MacGregor Eddy and Vandenberg protest, May 5, 2009

By the Koreans and Korean-origin residents in the foreign countries

We are the Koreans and Korean-origin residents in the foreign countries, including the members of the Korea organizing committee for the International Conference against the Asia Pacific Missile Defense and for the End of Arms Race from April 16 to 18, 2009, Seoul, Korea. The conference was co-sponsored by the Global Network against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict-North East Asia and the Korea organizing committee.

We send the strong solidarity message to MacGregor Eddy, a board member of the Global Network and WILPF DISARM, a founder of the Vandenberg Peace Legal Defense fund, and a producer of much appreciated video by the Koreans, ‘A Space 4 Peace’, 2008 and her colleagues who would protest on May 5, 2009, at the Vandenberg Space Command in Santa Barbara county, against the Delta II rocket for a Star Wars Satellite.

According to the website of the Vandenberg Witness, http://vandenbergwitness.org/,
it is heard that the United Launch Alliance Delta 2 rocket would launch the Space Tracking and Surveillance System Advanced Technology Risk Reduction (STSS-ATRR) research and development mission for the Missile Defense Agency. It is also told that the mission is heard to be previously called Block 2010 Spacecraft Risk Reduction and NASA would oversee the launch.

We are grateful of MacGregor Eddy who informed this and who decided to protest at the risk of her own arrest. It is known that she has been under the "lifetime ban and bar" order which the military authorities have given against her and five others-Fr. Louie Vitale, Steve Kelly, Jeff Dietrich, Mike Wisniewski and Dennis Apel – for her former protests there. We strongly urge the U.S. military authorities not to arrest her on May 5, who should be called as the true patriots for the U.S. because she and her colleagues are the highest noble people who have been truly dedicating their lives for the peace of all human race. If the arrest happens, we, the Koreans & Korean-origin resident in foreign countries will far-spread the news to the Koreans and neighbor countries at the greatest embarrassment of the U.S. military authorities. And we will do our best with what we can do for the safety of her and her colleagues.

We think that the planned launch, blinded to any international mainstream media and international people’s eye sight shows the hypocritical nature of the U.S. imperialism which has been demonizing the North Korea’s April 5 launch of the civilian satellite for peaceful purpose, totally legal by the Outer Space Treaty by the U.N. 1967.

Furthermore, we later became to know that a U.S. Air Force team successfully launched a new-generation military communication satellite from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. April 3, 2009 when an Atlas V rocket carried a Wideband Global Satellite Communication satellite into space. The U.S. air force news explicitly told that ‘the satellite was designed to provide high-capacity communications to U.S. military forces.’ It has seldom been known to any international media as in the case of the planned launch of the satellite in Vandenberg on May 5, 2009, as mentioned above.

http://www.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123142879

We, Koreans and Korean-origin residents in the foreign countries can not but shudder at the news of Vandenberg because we know that the Vandenberg Space Command has been one of the two sites for the U.S. NMD with the site of the Alaska, whose excuse of its MD establishment has been the possible missile attack from the North Korea. We know that the excuse behind its massive facilities has been for hiding for the desire of the U.S. imperialism which ultimately targets the China.

The satellite launch in the Vandenberg AFB would serve to and increase the wrong ambition of the global dominance by the United States thru the space dominance, as claimed in the Vision 2020 by the U.S. AFB in 1996. It would also increase the political, militaristic tension in the Asia Pacific where the U.S. has smeared to increase and advance its Missile Defense systems under the imperial alliance of the U.S.-Japan-South Korean government. It would also aggravate the environmental damage to the earth and space thru the rocket fuel and the space debris. The Marshall Islands have been one of the greatest victims as in the Space4Peace video she has produced.

The satellite launch in Vandenberg would be done above all, at the economic sacrifice of the people’s welfare of the United States. Furthermore, the globally expanding space war system including the MD system has also contributed to make worsen people’s welfare in the countries of the U.S. allies, as well. Wooksik Cheong, a representative of the Peace Network and a leading member of the Korea committee has noticed that the total cost for acquiring MD system from the U.S. and other NATO countries and its related system would be amounted for the South Koreans about several tens of trillions of won [about $20~30 billion], if the fatal maintenance costs are included.

http://www.space4peace.org/actions/gnconf_2009.htm

Regarding that average annual defense budget of the South Korea has increased almost up to $20 billion and its defense portion of its GDP is one of the highest proportions in the world, at the cost of the decreasing welfare of the South Koreans under the global economic difficulty, the expansion of the U.S. space war system including the planned satellite launch in Vandenberg will be shown to the Koreans as one of the aggressive activities which would counter their wishes of peace and security thru the dialogue and economic stabilization. Above all, it also threatens again the Korean’s long time wishes of the peaceful reunification which have been hindered by the U.S. imperialism thru political control, economic exploitation and military subjugation of the South Korea. The U.S. had the biggest responsibility of the Korea’s division as well by diving the line in 30 minutes in 1945.

We, Koreans and Korean-origin residents in the foreign countries aspire the Peace Treaty while opposing any U.S. and NATO’s space war systems including the Missile Defense which should be called rather ‘missile offense’. We think that by only the dialogues for the peace treaty and arms reductions among the related countries, Koreans can achieve their peaceful reunification that would contribute to the peace of the Asia-Pacific and the world, as well.

We. Koreans and Korean-origin residents in the foreign countries send our best gratitude and warm wishes to MacGregor Eddy and her colleagues who have been fighting for long time against the space war systems with their strong morality, far sight for the space peace and understanding of the whole effects of their activities on the earth including the countries in the Asia Pacific. We also strongly support the position of the Global Network against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space and the Women’s League for Peace and Freedom_Disarm who have been the ones of the leading organizations for space peace issues and are supporting her protest adamantly.

Best solidarity in peace

Global Network against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict-North East Asia

http://www.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123142879

http://www.space4peace.org/actions/gnconf_2009.htm
