[Jeju Update] Learning a revolutionary 4.3 spirit: Yi Duk-Goo

The below is an excerpt translation of the essay titled as 'Shuddering at Sanjeon, “Ah, the spirits came” by Kim Kyung-Hoon, one of the representing poets in the Jeju Island. Beginning with his poem on the 4.3 spirits, he introduces a deceased figure, Yi Duk-Goo, one of leaders of the 4.3 Jeju uprising during 1948. Kim Kyung-Hoon and other people have visited ‘Yi Duk Goo Sanjeon,’ one of the 4.3. remaining sites in the Jeju Island on March 12, 2011. While many people here connect the current struggle against naval base to the Jeju 4. 3 uprising, the story here informed by Kim Kyung-Hoon provides the tip on the history of the Jeju Island. The world that we hope
By Kim Kyung-Hoon

How is the world
Where you are living now?
Is the world
Where human beings live as the true human beings?
Has the world become
What we have aspired to establish at the expense of our lives?
If it is such a world
I may dance
If not,
Start again now at this moment
That is what I
And we, the people in the Jeju Island
Hope.
Please do not abandon us
Who have sacrificed our lives

(arbitrary translation)

The ‘Yi Duk-Goo Sanjeon’ is so called ‘Sianmoroo,’ where the residents of Bongaeri have made a refugee from the winter of 1948 to the spring of 1949. Through the winter, the Yi Duk-Goo resistance unit has stayed here for a while and there are some people who even tell that it is the last place of Yi Duk-Goo. That is why it is named after Yi Duk-Goo. The Yi Duk-Goo Sanjeon (* The word, 'Sanjeon' means 'mountaine field' in translation) may be the single site whose location name is added with person’s name in its front among the 4.3 remaining sites.

Yi Duk Goo Sanjeon
By Kim Kyung-Hoon

We have not died yet.
Our struggles have not finished yet.
Even though my body parts have been scattered with rain and wind
Even though the flags do not flutter any more
Through the dense and bare forest
Through the wind sound being wound around
Through the crow sound
Please tell, trees, stones, and grass flowers
Please tell, becoming eco
Between the roots of trees among the rocks
The boiling blood of the Adonis amurensis
Would stand up through snow
We have never stopped our struggles

(arbitrary translation)

A Man of face all over with pits, Duk-Goo, Duk-Goo, Yi Duk-Goo, Future commander! A Synonym of Jeju 4.3 but a person not acknowledged as the victim of Jeju 4.3

[..]

A figure of thoroughly being tabooed as much as his bereaved family members could not report, not to mention acknowledgement. A revolutionist with the most pathetic misfortune with all his family members annihilated and completely abandoned from the South, North and even the Jeju Island. He meets his last end near the so called Gaori oreum around 4pm, in the afternoon of June 7, 1949. It is known as the established theory that he made suicide during the engagement with the police whom his followers who had betrayed him drew into him.

The corpse of Yi Duk-Goo was to be exhibited in the Gwandukjung square in the Jeju City. That succeeded its tradition in the very place where the heads of the people revolutions in the Jeju Island in the history were decapitated and hung. It is told that his corpse was exhibited for a day and cremated in the Naechang called Namsoogak near the area but because of heavy rain next day, its ashes were drift away.

At the time of Jeju 4. 3 the subjugation units made half of his great-grandmother’s tombstone by shooting it which had been located at the Jikyung, Hoechun, Jeju city. As of today, 2011, the site for the house of his birth, located in the Shinchon-ri, Chochun-eup, has been buried by the coastal road that was newly open. The destruction named violence and burial named development are being continued without exception throughout the past and present.

I ruminate again in the Yi Duk Goo Sanjeon. The Jeju 4. 3 should not be the matter of the left and right but the matter of right and wrong.

Text Fwd: [Bruce Gagnon] U.S. LOOKING FOR A FIGHT

* Image source: same as the link

Bruce Gagnon's Organizing Notes blog
U.S. LOOKING FOR A FIGHT
Nov. 27, 2010

The Advent vigils (four weeks in a row) began today at Bath Iron Works (BIW) here in Maine. BIW is the place where Navy Aegis destroyers are built that are presently being used as part of the U.S.-South Korea (ROK) war games which are bumping up against the coastline of North Korea. I noticed that the USS Cowpens is a part of this U.S. naval battle group that is being led toward North Korea by the aircraft carrier named the USS George Washington.

I know about the USS Cowpens because it was the ship that fired the first shot (cruise missiles) in the 2003 U.S. shock and awe attack on Iraq. I know this because the woman who was driving the USS Cowpens at that historic moment has become a friend of our family and was at our home for Thanksgiving just two days ago.

This young woman was a Lieutenant in the Navy and was the Officer of the Deck at the time of the Cowpens attack on Iraq. She has since gotten out of the Navy and is now a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW). She has not yet gotten over the pain of her role in that unprovoked, immoral, and illegal attack on Iraq.

North Korea knows all about the U.S. proclivity to attack smaller countries for no good reason. In years past the world has watched the U.S. beat up on Korea, Cuba, Vietnam, Granada, Panama, Libya, Somalia, Haiti, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. North Korea must wonder if their day is coming soon as well.

As I noted in other recent blogs on this subject, the U.S. and South Korea have been running aggressive military war games each month since last July and these massive drills are directed right at North Korea. North Korea must each time put their military and their population on alert because they can't take any chances. Having seen the U.S. record of attacking weaker countries they must consider that this time the war games could be for real.

As I stood on the sidewalk in front of BIW for the hour-long vigil today I held a sign with a picture of a train painted on it by one of our local artist friends. The sign read "Built in Bath". Some of the passing Saturday early-shift workers got the message and smiled as they drove home. The truth is that a number of those working inside BIW know that their "product" is a first-strike attack military machine. They'd rather be building rail systems or wind turbines. But we make weapons and we make war in America today and military production is one of the few jobs around in our declining economy. It's like those who worked in the death camps for Hitler's Army during WW II. It was a job and they wanted to believe that their country was right - Germany uber alles. In America we say - USA, USA, #1!

The U.S. is outfitting these Navy Aegis destroyers with "missile defense" systems and activists in South Korea and Japan clearly understand the role of these warships in U.S. military strategy. The U.S. intends to use these MD systems to pick-off retaliatory strikes after a Pentagon first-strike attack on North Korea or China. The U.S. is doubling its military presence in the Asian-Pacific region for a clear reason.

Like any bully, the U.S. military is poking a sharp stick at North Korea (and China) and basically daring them to fight back. The U.S. (and their junior partners in South Korea and Japan) are out to militarize the region and are just itching for a military response that would then "justify" an overwhelming response.

The U.S. weapons corporations love this game of hardball, or as it used to be called, gunboat diplomacy. The power tripping U.S. government intends to keep pushing North Korea into a corner and will keep pissing on them until they get another response. At the rate things are now going it likely won't take long.

The key factor in all of this is China. How long will China allow the U.S. to keep pouring gasoline on the hot fire in the Asian-Pacific? They hold our debt yet know that if they cut the U.S. loose then the entire global economy will suffer even more. But China is quickly getting fed up with U.S. military bravado in their back yard.

China must support North Korea because if that country is toppled then the U.S. would put military bases right on China's border. This was an important reason for the Korean War in the first place, the U.S. wanted to take control of the entire Korean peninsula and thus have bases right alongside Russia and China.

If the American people knew half of what was going on in their name they'd be freaking out but due to corporate control of the media, and generations of government brainwashing, most of our citizens are in the dark. Virtually all they know about any of what is going on right now in Korea is what they are told by the same people who are stirring the boiling pot of war.

Sadly most Americans have to learn the hard way. Hopefully it won't take a shooting war with China to wake the public up from their deep sleep.

Text Fwd:[Ito Narihiko] The Building of East Asian Peace Community and Role of International Society [

* Peace Making Issue 176
The Building of East Asian Peace Community and Role of International Society

Ito Narihiko (2010/09/22)

1. Prerequisite 1 : Liquidating the past of Japanese Empire in order to build East Asian Peace Community

If Japan wants to participate in building East Asian Peace Community, it is necessary for Japan to liquidate the past of Japanese imperialism. Japanese annexation of Korea was on 22nd August 1910 and Japan colonized Korea. It was one hundred years ago. However Japanese annexation of Korea was not surprise event. Since Joseon-Japan Treaty of Peace and Amity was signed by force on Feb. 1876, Japanese Empire tried to plunder Korean Empire with careful planning.

For example there was an uprising of Donghak farmers’ army who asked the reform of Royal Court on 1894 and there was a conflict between Japan and Ching to suppress the rebellion. Eventually Japan started a war with Ching and expelled Ching from Korean peninsula. After the Sino-Japanese War, Japan killed Empress Myeonseong who asked Russian for help on 8th October 1895. Japanese killers were found not guilty and released for lack of evidence. Emperor Gojong was concerned with invasion of Japan and asked Russian Legation for help. This incident led to confrontation between Russia and Japan.

Japan started a war with Russia on 1904~1905 and Japan expelled Russia from Korea. After Japan had success in expelling Ching and Russia who were closely related with Korea, Japan, USA and England signed confidentiality agreement. Japan admitted the domination of Philippines by USA and the domination of India by England and Japan gained approval to dominate Korea. I called this confidentiality agreement ‘The discourse of wolves’. After that, on November 1905 Ito Hirobumi invaded Seoul with fifty thousand troops and forced Emperor sign on Japan-Korea Protectorate Treaty as known as Eulsa Treaty which deprived Korea of diplomacy and placed a Japanese supervisor over Korean government.

On July 1907 Japan forced Korea to sign Jeongmichil Treaty which put all internal affairs under the supervisor and dissolved Korean army. This treaty deprived Korea of freedom, independence and autonomy. On 22nd August 1910 Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty was signed by force and Japan deprived Korea of entire territory and colonized Korea.

Since Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty was unlawful and unfair, it cannot be even called a treaty. However Japan government has never apologized for what they had done to Korea and Korean people formally. Since year 2010 is 100th year of colonial rule of Korea by Japan, it is necessary for Japanese government to apologize formally to Korea and Korean people.

The colonial rule of Korean Peninsula which lasted 36 years has given humiliation and asked painful sacrifices to Korean people. Japanese government has to apologize what they had done and feel sorry and compensate.

Japanese independent documentary filmmaker has been detained without any legitimate reasons more than for a week. This is a serious suppression not only of him, but also of Japanese media activists & independent filmmakers. Please keep your eyes on this affair and sign the petition.

Petitioners: the NDS and the Association Calling for
the Immediate Release of Mr. K (Free K!)

On August 22nd (Sunday), our friend and a member of the NDS (Nakazaki-cho Documentary Space), Mr, K, was taken into custody in a violent manner and arrested by detectives from the 3rd Section of the Security Police, in addition to having his home searched. Additionally, the following morning, the local office of the Kamagasaki Patrol Association and the editorial office of the People's News were subjected to a police search. According to police, the reasons given for the arrest are "the falsification of information on a license (resulting from a discrepancy found in the listed home address on the individual's driver's license)" and "the forgery of a stamped private document related to a rental contract (resulting from a simple mistake whereby the individual mistakenly wrote the name of his former guarantor on a contract at the time of contract renewal)," and the reason given for the search of the second and third aforementioned locations, is the unreasonable explanation that these locations were places that Mr. K had frequented in the past. Although such cases of arrest and detention on the basis of "light criminal charges," carried out by the Security Police are not well known by the general public, for individuals involved in social activism, these types of actions have become all too familiar, and such abuses of state power and political suppression have finally been unleashed on individuals involved in the expression of free thought. Furthermore, the term of this individual's detention has been further extended and he has been deprived of his visitation rights, preventing us from meeting with him in person.

As a documentary film maker and an expressive voice of the people, Mr. K, who is a second generation ethnic Korean and works as a day laborer in Kamagasaki, has gone to great lengths to expose many of the realities that the Japanese government has tried to hide and conceal, by using his video camera to shed light on such subjects. Although Mr. K is an ethnic Korean, who as a result is deprived of suffrage, he went to great lengths to document the struggle of the day laborers of Kamagasaki who had been denied their right to vote because of the unilateral actions of the City of Osaka to revoke these individuals of their certificates of residence, in his documentary film "Give Back the Certificates of Residence of the People of Kama (2010)." Despite this fact however, Mr, K has continued to work closely and to actively document this movement to restore the certificates of residency of these oppressed people.

Additionally, Mr. K has been involved in such activities as the Overwinter Struggle, an event that is held annually in Kamagasaki and the public parks of Osaka City, and he has documented the forced removal of the homeless tent community in Nagai Park in his film "A Large Flower Grows in Nagai Park (2008)," in addition to documenting gatherings held in remembrance of the events of the "April 3rd Incident," which occurred in his ancestral home of Jeju island. Furthermore, he has also worked to document for posterity the Korean Madang rituals that portray the Korean struggle for democracy, as well as capturing the final moments of Ryu-ou-gu Shrine, a location where ethnic Korean women had gathered to pray and share their tradition, and a location where the residents were recently subjected to forced eviction. This arrest is a grave action, which amounts to an attack by the state government on individuals who respect free speech, and it is an action that cannot be forgiven.

Furthermore, in July of this year, Mr. K had just recently become the plaintiff in a lawsuit against the Japanese government and the Obayashi Corporation, a construction contractor, and we believe the arrest of this individual amounts not only to the suppression of free speech, but to a politically motivated act of suppression as well. The impetus for this lawsuit came after Mr. K protested to his on-site employer's demands that Mr. K use his Japanese name, prompting Mr. K to file suit. This action by his employer exhibits a blatant lack of understanding and lack of repentance for the historical actions of the state of Japan, which forced the Korean people, under colonial and imperial rule, to adopt Japanese names as "subjects of the Japanese empire." In a day and age where deep rooted discrimination of ethnic Koreans still exists, and in a time when the history of the Second World War and colonial rule has continued to fade, we believe that Mr. K's claim raises an important question. If his detention continues to be extended, the court proceedings for this trial, which are scheduled to begin on September 16th, will be carried out with the plaintiff in absentia, and we are adamant in that we cannot forgive the infliction of such a grave injustice.

[A Request to All Who Read This Statement]

We demand that Mr. K immediately be released from detention. At the same time, we demand that all of the video tapes/records of his free expression that have been confiscated be returned to his possession. Through his pure and down to earth personality, Mr. K has been an inspiration to us all, and we sincerely ask that you provide us with your messages of solidarity and we highly appreciate any donations to his defense fund. We humbly ask for everyone's support and continued interest into this matter.

* Please note that we have decided not to disclose this individual's real name, taking into consideration the fact that he has decided to exercise his legal right to silence.

We are currently asking for the vocal support of individuals and organizations (we will relay any messages we receive to Mr. K, and if given permission, we will also upload them to our blog).

<연대지원요청>

LOOKING FOR A FIGHT

Right now the U.S. military is practicing an invasion of North Korea. The U.S. and South Korean military have just begun war games called "Invincible Spirit" which will include about 8,000 military personnel from both countries.

North Korea and China are not happy as they witness the U.S. currently doubling its military presence in the region. These war games, ostensibly aimed at North Korea, are ultimately being done in order to show China that the U.S. will "manage and control" this part of the world.

"We resolutely oppose any activities in the Yellow Sea that may threaten China's security," said a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman. Imagine if you would the howls of outrage if China was holding similar war game exercises off the coast of California. The politicians in America would be spitting on themselves as they screamed bloody murder. But when the U.S. does the same to other countries it is all "for the good".

Just last Friday Secretary of State Hillary Clinton got on her rostrum and amped up the war talk saying, "Peaceful resolution of the issues on the Korean Peninsula will be possible only if North Korea fundamentally changes its behavior."

Translation: North Korea must surrender to the U.S. or they will never have a moment of peace.

The U.S. destroyed North Korea during the Korean War. In his new book called The Korean War, historian Bruce Cumings recalls the truth about the war that to this day has not seen a peace agreement. Instead a truce was declared on July 27, 1953 but the U.S. war "games" today are evidence enough that the "conflict" still rages on.

The New York Times just days ago reviewed the new book by Cumings. Here are some parts of the review.

Americans need to get past the idea, Mr. Cumings says, that the Korean War was a “discrete, encapsulated” story that began in 1950, when the United States intervened to help push the Communist north out of the south of Korea, and ended in 1953, after the war bogged down in a stalemate. The United States succeeded in containment, establishing the 2.5-mile-wide demilitarized zone that still runs through Korea’s middle, but failed miserably at the war for the north, an attempt at Communist rollback.

Mr. Cumings argues that the Korean War was a civil war with long, tangled historical roots, one in which America had little business meddling. He notes how “appallingly dirty” the war was. In terms of civilian slaughter, he declares, “our ostensibly democratic ally was the worst offender, contrary to the American image of the North Koreans as fiendish terrorists.”

Mr. Cumings likens the indiscriminate American bombing of North Korea to genocide. He writes that American soldiers took part in, or observed, civilian atrocities not dissimilar to those at My Lai. An official inquiry is needed into some of these events, he writes, for any kind of healing to begin. (He also writes that this war, during which nearly 37,000 American soldiers died, deserves a memorial as potent and serious as Maya Lin’s Vietnam memorial.)

Among the most important things to understand about North Korean behavior then and now, Mr. Cumings writes, is the longtime enmity between Korea and Japan. Japan took Korea as a colony in 1910, with America’s blessing, and replaced the Korean language with Japanese. Japan humiliated and brutalized Korea in other ways. (During World War II the Japanese Army forcibly turned tens of thousands of Korean women into sex slaves known as “comfort women.”) About this history Mr. Cumings writes, “Neither Korea nor Japan has ever gotten over it.”

North Korea, which is virulently anti-Japan, remains bitter and fearful of that country and of the United States. It will do whatever it can to stay out of the hands of South Korea, where leaders have long-standing historical ties to Japan.

Mr. Cumings, in “The Korean War,” details the north’s own atrocities, and acknowledges that current “North Korean political practice is reprehensible.” But he says that we view that country through “Orientalist bigotry,” seeing only its morbid qualities. We wrongly label the country Stalinist, he argues. “There is no evidence in the North Korean experience of the mass violence against whole classes of people or the wholesale ‘purge’ that so clearly characterized Stalinism,” he writes.

The most eye-opening sections of “The Korean War” detail America’s saturation bombing of Korea’s north. “What hardly any Americans know or remember,” Mr. Cumings writes, “is that we carpet-bombed the north for three years with next to no concern for civilian casualties.” The United States dropped more bombs in Korea (635,000 tons, as well as 32,557 tons of napalm) than in the entire Pacific theater during World War II. Our logic seemed to be, he says, that “they are savages, so that gives us the right to shower napalm on innocents.”

Witness the carnage in this passage from early in “The Korean War”: “Here was the Vietnam War we came to know before Vietnam — gooks, napalm, rapes, whores, an unreliable ally, a cunning enemy, fundamentally untrained G.I.’s fighting a war their top generals barely understood, fragging of officers, contempt for the know-nothing civilians back home, devilish battles indescribable even to loved ones, press handouts from Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s headquarters apparently scripted by comedians or lunatics, an ostensible vision of bringing freedom and liberty to a sordid dictatorship run by servants of Japanese imperialism.”

You'd think that Obama and the Pentagon had enough war on their hands at this time. But the U.S. military is currently running provocative war games not only near China and North Korea.

Similar military operations are underway in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman where the U.S. and its war allies have 100 ships on maneuvers. The U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet headquarters is based just across the Gulf from Iran in Bahrain. There can be no doubt that the U.S. strategy is to create an incident with Iran in order to justify U.S. and Israeli attack on that nation.

And in the Caribbean, the U.S. has positioned some 5,000 troops in Costa Rica, just a stone's throw from Venezuela, under the pretext of doing "drug interdiction" operations. Clearly, just like the cases cited above, the U.S. is militarily surrounding and provoking Venezuela in hopes to justify the overthrow of the Hugo Chavez administration.

In the case of Iran and Venezuela we know that both those nations have significant supplies of oil. China is a huge importer of oil and thus a rival with the U.S. for declining supplies of fossil fuels. In the case of China the U.S. is developing the naval infrastructure to interdict China's oil importation by sea - thus "managing" their economic expansion.

The bully empire is on the lose and is looking for a fight. But back home in the U.S. the economy is collapsing under the weight of these global military operations. Something has to give - and it will be soon. We will have either total global war or the U.S. empire will collapse.

Which side are you on?

Joint South Korea-U.S. military drills begin as warning to North Korea
SEOUL, July 25 (Yonhap)

Excerpts

In terms of military assets, this week's joint drills are the biggest since 1976, when the allies staged exercises in response to the ax murders of two U.S. Army officers by North Korean soldiers at the truce village of Panmunjom.

"By displaying the sheer size of military capabilities, the drills will deliver a stark warning to North Korea," Rear Adm. Kim Kyung-shik of South Korean Navy told reporters.

The drills will improve military readiness across the full spectrum of capabilities, including various air, ground and sea operations to defend South Korea from a range of threats by North Korea, Kim said.

'North East Asia Solidarity Peace Message

-Sent upon the eve festival of the 62nd anniversary of the Jeju 4. 3 (March 19, 2010)-

On April 3, 1948, in the Jeju Island where the rhododendrons came out splendidly, there were people
who stood up in the heat of fury to keep the human lives and dignity. Since then, 62 years have passed.

The wish that the innumerable people and spirits who were massacred by the Jeju 4.3 incident pursued for was
the society peaceful and full of humanity. However, due to the powerful and wealthy people who were driven
only by their selfish interests, hatred was planted among people and the conflict and discrimination were caused.

The Okinawa has met its 65th anniversary from the invasion by the United States military. The United States military that landed into the Kerama Islands on March 26, 1945 killed about 100,000 innocent people.

Also, the Japanese military massacred the villagers in Okinawa and Chosun (* currently Korea) military – the forced draftees. The girls and women who were dragged out under the name of the comfort women were sacrificed.

Now is the time that we should refuse war and violence, abolish all the military bases and to establish the peaceful society, gather all the power of the people in the Jeju island, Okinawa and Japan,
therefore to make the North East Asia as the peace zone.

We send our message that ‘the iife is the treasure (in Okinawa words, Nuzziidoitakara (?) Like the hot magma that unendingly flows under the grounds of the Halla Mt., let’s continuously keep going
with the hot enthusiastic heart that purses for peace.'

[Video Fwd] On the 50th Anniversary of 3.15 People’s Uprising in Masan

Tomorrow is the 50th anniversary of 3.15 people’s uprising in City of Masan in the Gyungsangnam-do, a province in the southern part of Korea. The 3.15 people’s uprising in Masan in 1960 was the beginning that has eventually led to 4.19 people’s uprising against the Lee Seung-Man dictatorship in the same year.

Many activists and artists here in Korea see the current Lee Myung Bak government as the return of the dictatorship(backed by the United States government) that has dominated South Korea from 1945 to 1992. Korea Report has uploaded the video on people’s uprising on April 19, 1960. I upload it here, as well, to remind the Korean history for us. The video made by the
'Memorial association of 4.19 revolution' starts with the title, " You, the inflamed of blood, dream the April 19 Revolution-cry toward the world of contradiction and lie (arbitrary translation)". The song,'Brush, Brush, Green Brush' has been one of the popular songs during the people's uprising in the 80s, in South Korea.

Brush, Brush, Green Brush (arbitrary translation of the below)

In this divided world where the severe wind blows and mother’s tear pierces my heart,
For the true world & freedom in which people’s spirit becomes the master,
I will row the river even though I may become black and blue watered like sagebrush.
Brush, brush, green brush, don’t tremble by the early wind.
In the place where I am tied under the iron bars, I will see you while I am alive.

The carrying of the coffins has started at 9am at the Soonchunhyang University Hospital
where the five martyrs’ dead bodies were preserved for 355days for the struggle,
before the farewell ceremony.

The last farewell ceremony was held in the Seoul station at 12pm,

to fight against the government and corporation’s murderous redevelopment policies.

After about 3hours farewell ceremony, the five coffins were carried in the car.
The car was in the forefront, leading the people’s procession in the car-roads,
from the Seoul Station to the Namildang building, Yongsan where the five were killed.
The procession took about 3hours. The police tried to block it almost at the end of it
but the people’s power finally overcame it.

The big portraits of the five martyrs followed the coffins in the second line of the procession.
The Five are Mr. Lee Sang-Lim (B. 1938), Mr. Yang Hoe-Sung (B. 1952), Mr. Han Dae-Sung (B. 1956),
Mr. Yoon Yong-Hun (B. 1961) and Mr. Lee Sung-Soo (B. 1959) (from right to left)

The bereaved family members walked following the coffins and portraits
if the five while the snow began to fall down.
The snow fell down by the late evening.

Representatives of the civil organizations and progressive parties, and general citizens
followed the bereaved family members in the solemn atmosphere. The banners says,

“ Examine the Whole Truth of the Yongsan Tragedy! Punish the Responsible Personnel!
Stop the Murderous Development!”

A large painting visualizing the resurrection of the five martyrs from the fire
was carried by the volunteer citizens.

People chanted and hold the signs of the “ Examine the Truth of the Yongsan tragedy”
and “ Stop the Murderous Development.”
While not shown in the photo, police with large blank shields were mobilized in tremendous numbers
along the streets where the procession took.

“Stop the Murderous Development”

The deceased were finally buried in the Maseok Moran Park
while the bereaved family members and citizens participated.
The park is where many martyrs from the various fields of the democracy and unification movements
have traditionally been buried.

Seoul Wants to Recover War Remains in NK
By Jung Sung-ki, Staff Reporter

South Korea will discuss with North Korea the repatriation of war remains buried in the North as part of humanitarian efforts, the Ministry of National Defense said Monday.

Ministry officials said they had established detailed measures for an envisaged inter-Korean joint excavation of the remains of soldiers killed during the 1950-53 Korean War, and will propose the plans to the North soon.

The joint effort had already been agreed upon by the two Koreas during the second inter-Korean defense ministerial talks in November 2007, according to the officials.

Vice Defense Minister Chang Soo-man told reporters, ``The proposal for the joint excavation is also part of efforts to improve ties between the two Koreas.''

``It's time to take bilateral efforts to improve relations. If North Korea responds to our proposal positively, that will be a great step forward in improving inter-Korean ties,'' Chang said.

Earlier in the day, President Lee Myung-bak pledged in his New Year's address that he would prioritize repatriating the remains of fallen soldiers in North Korea on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War.

According to the ministry, about 39,000 soldiers, or 30 percent of South Korean war dead, were buried in the North. About 10 percent of the estimated 137,000 are believed to have been buried in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that divides the Korean Peninsula.

South Korea has recovered the remains of about 3,360 fallen soldiers since 2000.

The United States conducted excavation work in the North between 1996 and 2005 and reclaimed 225 sets of remains.

The two Koreas remain technically at war as the Korean War ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

MASSACRE AT NO GUN-RI 노근리의 학살

Yesterday I spent most of the day visiting the site of the US Army 7th Cavalry Regiment's massacre of more than 225 innocent Korean civilians on July 26, 1950 at No Gun-ri during the Korean War.

In the days before July 26, 1950 the North Korean army was pushing
US military forces southward. The US Army ordered two villages of peasant farmers in the No Gun-ri area to evacuate. There were taken by the US military to a nearby railroad track and ordered to walk along it. At one point the 500-600 refugees were instructed to bunch up and sit on the tracks. Two US military aircraft then circled overhead and dropped 7-8 bombs on their heads.

This story was told to me yesterday by a 72 year-old woman, Yang Kae-suk, who was 13 years-old at the time of the attack. Her father was carrying her grandmother on his back. The body of her grandmother was never found as body parts flew in every direction.

Her other family members tried to hide near a tree and her mother was severely wounded. A bomb fragment hit Yang in the back of the head and her left eye ball blew out of the socket and she tossed it on the ground.

Soon 7th Cavalry soldiers began firing their rifles at the defenseless crowd and they hid for cover under a nearby train tunnel. For the next four days and three nights the people inside the tunnels were fired on from four different directions by the US soldiers who had them surrounded. US planes reappeared and strafed them with machine gun fire. More people, who were crammed inside the tunnels, were killed as they tried to sneak out for water or tried to escape. Some number did escape the madness that surrounded them.

Finally in the dark of night the Army's 7th Cavalry withdrew as the North Korean Army advanced. Then early on the fourth morning the North Koreans told the people they were free.

This was not the first time the 7th Cavalry had been associated with a mass slaughter of civilians. The Regiment perpetrated the Wounded Knee Massacre in South Dakota on December 29, 1890, at the end of the Indian Wars.

Yang's mother was in terrible need of medical care but there was none available. Maggots had begun to appear inside her wounds. Her father made medicines from the rye seed and bandages from the persimmon tree that grows abundantly in the area. Her mother was to survive.

For many years the No Gun-ri massacre remained a US Army secret as the successive right-wing governments in South Korea, under the control of the US, kept a lid on the story. But then in 1999 the Associated Press broke the story and the BBC followed with a documentary (entitled "Kill 'em All") a few years later. This film reveals orders coming from the highest levels of the Army instructing the field commanders to kill all civilians who got in the way.

Over the years the survivors and their supporters had been trying to bring justice to those who were killed or wounded at No Gun-ri. They organized the "Committee for Unveiling Truth about the No Gun-ri Massacre" and finally helped force the creation of a joint South Korea-US investigation. (The US for a long time tried to down play the size of the killing field.) The final reported conservatively acknowledged the deaths of 228 people and the tunnel where people hid was surveyed and all bullet damage was marked to show the places where US troops had fired-on the tunnel. At both ends of the tunnel there are now triangles (showing where bullets still remain embedded in the concrete) and circles (where bullets created marks).

I asked Yang how she felt today about the US military. She said she could never go to school because of her missing eye. Today she grows grapes and persimmons in the small farming village where she lives. "War should not be," she told me.

To this day there has been no financial compensation to the victims or their families. About 50 survivors of the No Gun-ri massacre are still alive.

Chung Koo Do is the Director of the No Gun-Ri Institute for Peace Studies and is dedicated to ensuring that the memory of the massacre is not lost and that justice prevails. His mother was a survivor of the slaughter by the 7th Cavalry. He told me that there were over 500 incidents of killing of civilians during the war but No Gun-ri was the only case investigated by a joint South Korean-US government team. After the No Gun-ri investigation the US said it would not look into any other case.

2010 will be the 60th anniversary of No Gun-Ri. Chung told me his organization is planning to sponsor several important events to commemorate the massacre. He hopes that US soldiers who were involved in the Korean War will come for the events and he particularly hopes that Veterans for Peace in the US will send a delegation to Korea during this time. He asked me to help them make that possible and I told him I would do my best.

Chung pointed out with great pride the large area surrounding the No Gun-ri massacre site that will become a peace park. The South Korean government is now building a peace museum, educational facilities, and memorials. The survivors, and their descendants, are determined to keep the memory of No Gun-ri in the forefront of international peace movement efforts.

It is a sad moment in history that should be remembered by all of us.
