Jeju artists lead way to truth, justice, and healing

Art has a unique ability to move people, to change minds and heal hearts. The use of art to reveal truth, make political statements and initiate revolutions is known throughout the world.

Jeju artists – visual, performance, literary – have been especially influential in the ‘Sasam’ Movement (local term for the mid-20th century period of mass killings), the urge of Jeju people to reveal the truth about the military brutality and deep tragedy of that time.

Art has also helped Jeju people to heal.

In 1979, writer Hyun Ki Young published “Aunt Suni,” a work of fiction depicting events of that era. The first of its kind, this groundbreaking book brought both recognition and persecution to its author. An English translation was published in 2008.

Han Rimwha, a novelist, poet, and independent researcher, published a three-volume novel on related themes in 1991 entitled “The Sunset on Mount Halla.” Today the president of the Jeju Writers’ Association, Han describes frequent interrogations as she researched material for her literary work.

Following the publication of her novel, Han was interviewed by more than 60 media representatives.

When asked if many writers in her association are presently focused on this poignant historical event, she replied in the affirmative. She herself has written a total of six books and numerous articles on the subject.

On April 1, the association will facilitate a conference on ‘Sasam literature’ to discuss how best to write about the tragedy and what to focus on. On the 9th, the group will hold a walk – a pilgrimage of sorts, and the first of its kind – in the footsteps of the refugees who fled to Mount Halla, for the purpose, in the words of Han, of “healing ‘Sasam’.”

The Jeju Writers’ Association, a branch of the related national organization, has more than 90 members. It maintains an office and a book cafe located in the “House of Jeju Writers” shared by the Jeju Literature Association.

The performing arts have also focused on events of this tragic historical period. A theatre company, Nori Bae Hallasan, was formed in 1987 as part of the democracy movement and continues to this day. Though investigated, the troupe avoided outright persecution by using symbolism and imagery rather than a more direct portrayal of its themes.

With performances related to the turmoil and massacres of the mid-20th century and other political controversies, this unique group travels from village to village to perform in a traditional style of theatre-in-the-round which includes audience participation.

Yoon Miran, a performance artist who has been involved with the troupe since 1989, identifies the group’s performances as consciousness-raising.

“Art can be used as a sword,” Yoon expressed, “to kill or threaten the enemy – or it can be healing.”

Participatory in nature, the group’s work encourages their audience to express otherwise dangerous or difficult emotions like anger and mourning. The company remains wildly popular to this day and also performs in Japan to the Jeju diaspora.

“Jeju has its own indigenous ways to heal,” said Yoon.

In addition to writers and performers, visual artists have been especially instrumental in highlighting this period of tragedy and injustice.

An artists’ group organized in 1988 specifically to create ‘Sasam Art.’ Its first show was held discreetly in a former “Citizen Center” near the KAL Hotel and titled “April Exhibition” as the term ‘Sasam’ (literally, ‘4.3’) was forbidden by law.

Works in the exhibit were abstract and symbolic rather than literal. Even so, it was considered to be an “extremely dangerous” act, according to art critic Kim Yu Jeong.

This show moved to a gallery in Seoul and included much more explicit works. Kim states that the exhibition was closely watched by the National Intelligence Agency, which censored and attempted to confiscate the works but was finally convinced otherwise.

Subsequent shows were held at the Min Gallery, which was located in Insadong but no longer exists. The gallery was dedicated to politically progressive art and its owner “suffered a lot,” according to Kim.

The artist group reorganized in 1991 as Tamna Artists Association, dedicated more than ever to ‘Sasam Art.’ It remains today with a large membership and sponsors an annual exhibition.

This year’s exhibit is a dramatic departure from previous ones. Artist Koh Gill Chun has reported that, in front of an audience, he will be creating a work of art on the site where the home of a leader in the resistance movement of that era once stood. A shamanic ritual of healing will also be performed. The site is now part of Hallasan National Park.

Kang Yo Bae is perhaps the most well known of ‘Sasam Artists’ and a co-founder of the Tamna Artists Association. While he also creates art seemingly unrelated to this theme, he admits that all of his work is in some way influenced by the events of that terrible time.

He identifies “emotional ups and downs,” citing this artwork work as “mentally difficult” while also acknowledging that doing such work helps to “heal” him. However he admits that he cannot sustain such a focus for long periods of time.

In 1992, Kang’s ‘Sasam Art’ was shown in Jeju, Seoul, and Daegu; the exhibition was entitled, “The Camellia Has Fallen.” According to Kim, it was considered a monumentally influential event. When the 4.3 Peace Park opened on Jeju in 2008, 50 of Kang’s works were displayed in a special exhibition bearing the same title.

Another influential artist and Tamna Artists Association co-founder is Park Gyung Hoon. An exhibition of his woodcut work, a style used by a majority of ‘Sasam Artists’ at the time according to Kim, was on display at Jeju National University in 1990.

The exhibit was censored by local police, and one work – of refugees on Mount Halla destroying the US flag – was removed.

The first significant group exhibition of the Tamna Artists Association, entitled “Sasam Exhibition,” was held in 1994. It included the works of 42 artists and showed in two locations: Sejong Gallery in Seoul, and Jeju Arts and Culture Center.

Some artists declined to participate out of fear. Public officials ordered the exhibit to close, 2 to 3 works were removed, and the remainder were then permitted to be shown.

In a public display of support considered “radical” and “shocking” at the time, according to Kim, Jeju’s then-Governor Shin Gu Bum attended and donated to the show.

Lee Eun Bang, a well known writer on themes related to the massacre, attended the show and cried upon seeing his own photo displayed. According to Kim, though Lee was profoundly impoverished, he nevertheless donated 5,000 won.

In his work, published in a unique handwritten style, Lee took a different approach than others by writing the history of the Jeju resisters. He was blacklisted by the National Intelligence Agency.

One of the most influential activist-artists today is the aforementioned Koh Gill Chun.

Koh’s work is prolific, and one of his most striking may be that permanently housed in the 4.3 Peace Park Memorial. Entitled “Death Island,” it is a grouping of 23 alto-relievo sculptures in white plaster and clay which depict the variety of victims’ tortures and deaths.

Following the discovery of a mass grave on the grounds of Jeju International Airport, Koh created another grouping of sculptures, this one of tragic life-sized figures in clay emerging from earth. It was included in the 2009 Tamna Artists Association exhibit and was entitled, “From the ashes of the earth, we stand.”

Koh describes his “shocking” discovery of US political progressive and scholar Noam Chomsky’s inclusion of this tragedy [“...the suppression of a peasant revolt in...Cheju Island”] in Chomsky’s 1992 book, “What Uncle Sam Really Wants.” He describes this as the initial motivation behind his own ‘Sasam Art’ and political activism.

I missed attending a hastily called news conference today in Augusta, Maine, organized by the Union of Maine Visual Artists and the state AFL-CIO, because I was taping the next edition of my TV show. The news confab was speaking out against our reactionary Gov. Paul LePage's decision to take down a mural that is on the wall inside the lobby of the state Department of Labor.

The governor apparently received an email signed by "Secret Admirer" who complained that the mural was inappropriate for the Department of Labor. The photo above is only part of the mural which depicts the history of workers in Maine who have labored in the textile and paper mills and at Bath Iron Works (BIW) among other places. The art piece tells the story of labor strikes and worker victories to bring safe and fair working conditions.

The anonymous email, which precipitated Gov. LePage's rampage against labor history in Maine, is as follows:

Dear Governor LePage:

Welcome to Augusta. You are doing a great job. Keep it up.
The purpose of my letter is to express my disbelief of what I saw at the Maine Department of Labor Offices in Augusta during a recent visit. While sitting in the lobby I had the opportunity to study a very large mural which adorns the lobby area. In this mural I observed a figure which closely resembles the former Commissioner of Labor. In studying the mural I also observed that this mural is nothing but propaganda to further the agenda of the Union movement. I felt for a moment that I was in communist North Korea where they use these murals to brainwash the masses.
Mr. LePage with all due respect I must say: "MR. LEPAGE, PLEASE TEAR DOWN THIS MURAL."

Again, thank you for your candor and fresh approach to State Government. Keep up the good work.

A Secret Admirer......


So obviously all it takes is a complaint from one right-winger and the new Tea Party Republican governor tries to wipe out more than 100 years of gritty worker history in our state. Just one comparison to "communist North Korea" and down the mural comes in the tradition of Ronald Reagan's famous Berlin call on Gorbachev to "tear down that wall."

As I am writing this I got a call from Peter Woodruff, union worker at Bath Iron Works, who took the day off so he could attend the news conference. He was asked to speak by leaders of the Union of Maine Visual Artists and he talked about another 100 workers being laid off today at BIW. He concluded his words with a call for the several hundred people to show up for the April 4 Bring Our War $$ Home rally at the state capital.

The hardcore right-wing is feeling empowered right now in the U.S. They are demanding things like taking down murals - thoughts they'd never have entertained before the recent election - which LePage won with only 38% of the vote in a three-way race. Each week we are seeing more and more evidence that the war on the working class is in full-swing in our state.

It's going to take all of us to hold on to social progress at the rate things are going. We are going to be called on to stand up and speak out even when our knees are shaking from fright.

Think of the struggle and sacrifices people made to build the labor movement and to bring forward social progress. We all need to defend that hard won legacy.

The unions of the three terrestrial broadcast companies are unanimously demanding the cancellation of President Lee Myung-bak’s televised discussion with the nation, scheduled for Tuesday. Their decision to show unanimous opposition has strengthened protest against the televised program, “Dialogue with the President.”

With the union chairs and leaders in attendance, the unions of KBS, MBC and SBS decided to hold a press conference and demonstration in front of the Cheong Wa Dae (the presidential office in South Korea or Blue House) on Monday afternoon.

“If the broadcast companies simply broadcast live content featuring and planned by Cheong Wa Dae, the broadcast companies will becoming loudspeakers for those in power,” said New KBS Union Chairman Eom Gyeong-cheol on Sunday. “This is a direct instance that illustrates the extent to which the Cheong Wa Dae’s view of the media has become distorted.”

“The Cheong Wa Dae has violated the sole authority of the broadcast companies, and by accepting this, the broadcast companies have placed their own independence in serious danger,” said SungKongHoe University Professor Kim Seo-jung. “The decision by all three stations to simultaneously broadcast the president’s address on the morning before an extended holiday has violated the public’s right to decide what to watch.”

Semyung University Professor Jeong Yeon-woo said, “Communication between the president and the public remains severed with the president focused only on conveying and promoting his own declarations, like in this closed televised address.”

The criticism of the president’s coming address is the accumulated result of Cheong Wa Dae’s consistent decision to remain silent about matters disadvantageous to its leaders while giving a live broadcast with the president on any matter, foreign or domestic, that promotes his public relations. During his addresses during his first year in 2008 - an April 13 address on his visits to the United States and Japan and a June 19 address on the beef imports issue - he also discussed inter-Korean relations, cabinet reshuffles and other issues.


His four press conferences after that (excluding conferences after bilateral summits) were all promotional. Three of these were about the G-20 summit (Sept. 30, 2009, Nov. 3, 2010 and Nov. 12, 2010), and one was a press conference from Abu Dhabi about South Korea’s successful bid to build nuclear reactors in the UAE. Immediately after the successful rescue of the crew of the Samho Jewelry on Jan. 21, Lee stood in front of the camera to break the news.

On the other hand, Lee has remained quiet about contentious issues. During his September 2009 press conference on drawing the G-20 to Seoul, he excluded speaking on all other issues, and did not mention the revisions to the Sejong City Development Plan, the major pending issue of the day. In the November press conference on the G-20, there was just one question about the illegal surveillance issue, but Lee avoided answering it.

In response to criticism about the unilateralism of the coming Feb. 1 broadcast, Cheong Wa Dae officials said Sunday, “President Lee wants to take any questions the panelists, Hallym Institute of Advanced International Studies professor Jeong Gwan-yong and SBS anchor Han Su-jin, wish to ask.” They asked that people watch the actual broadcast and decide if it was all planned out in advance.

Representatives from more than 200 civic and social organizations hold a news conference to protest the Korea Communications Commission’s (KCC) decision that give the three major pro-administration newspapers, Chosun Ilbo, JoongAng Ilbo and Dong-A Ilbo, ChoJoongDong, and leading business newspaper Maeil Economic Daily, the rights to operate comprehensive programming cable channels at the Franciscan Education Center on Tuesday.

They said in a statement that the KCC has made efforts to give an array of additional favors to ensure the ChoJoongDong broadcasters’ survival, including allocation of single-digit channel numbers, so-called golden channels, and approval of advertisements for hospitals and special medicine. They demanded the KCC’s withdrawal of its decision on comprehensive programming cable channels, saying, “We will call for a National Assembly investigation and hearings on the biased, unfair and preferential selection of new broadcasters.”

Draw-a-Thon III, co-sponsored by CODEPINK Maine, The Union of Maine Visual Artists, and the Bring Our War $$ Home campaign in Maine, an opportuntiy for 'thon artists to mass produce images for parade art and posters with BOW$H messaging.

Many cooperated to teach and learn how to produce art all can use in the coming year to help the public connect the dots between war spending and budget cuts at home.

Held in conjunction with Robert Shetterly's show Portraits from Americans Who Tell the Truth at the Portland Public Library Lewis Gallery.

1. An installation exhibition at the Joongduk coast(Nov. 21 to 31, 2010)

The Tamna Association of the Artists opened its peace art exhibition in the Joonduk coast, a naval base planned area, at 3pm. last Nov. 21, 2010. The peace art exhibition, titled, ‘Mom and Sister, Let’s Live in Gangjeong’ shows many installation art works in various sites of there until Nov. 31. An artist drew some faces of the Gangjeong villagers.

The letters read:
‘I need your hypocrisy and blood.'

The while cloth meandering the lava molten rocks symbolizes the underwater sprung from the beneath of the Jeju Island. The Gangjeong village has been long time proud of its abundant clean water that has made possible of all the creatures living there and of the village's rich harvest, as the two letters of its name 'Gang' and 'Jeong' both mean water. If the naval base construction is driven with its first part, concrete will be poured over all these beautiful rocks and sea off the coast, killing all the endangered species there.

The exhibition site has been filled with many beautiful scenes of the Gangjeong village and its sea. The solidarity messages from the Koreans and internationals have also been displayed in the small wood panels hanging from the ceiling of this makeshift tent.

* Bomal and Obunjak are the names of the shells, in Korean.
Those are peculiar in the southern sea of Korea, including the Jeju island.

* Sotdae is one of the Korean traditional cultural objects. Built of long and thin tree branches and standing in key areas of the village and other places, it is believed to protect the areas from evils.

3. Exhibition of art works by Go Gyung Hwa ( Oct. 8 to Nov. 9, 2010)

Go Gyung-Hwa, a woman artist in the Jeju has worked on the Joongduk Sea and its coast where the naval base was planned. With her sensitive seeing and delicate touch, even the textures of the rocks are expressed in her drawings. She uses the method of rubbing and copying the textures of the rocks there. Thanks to her, we remind hundred million years of the lives of the rocks, here.

Photo by Yang Ho Geun Twenty years ago, Park Gyeong Hoon, an artist and a member of the Korean People’s Artist Federation, visited some of the bird-shaped concrete and reinforced steel vestiges of the Japanese colonial period on the island. Altteureu, located in Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo City, was an airfield built by the Japanese army during the Second World War. There were 30 hangars at Altteureu alone, though 10 were ultimately destroyed. ▲ Patriotic and Unpatriotic A real sized artwork of a Japanese fighter during the Japanese colonial period. Photo by Yang Ho Geun At the time the entire island was used as a military base aimed at conquering Asia. Park absorbed the pain of the Jeju people during his visit and said to himself that he would hold an art exhibition at the site to commemorate the suffering. Fast forward to this year, the centennial of Japan’s forced annexation of Korea, which sees that Park has realised his dream. After spending all of 2009 preparing for the event, an outdoor exhibition at the 11 hangars on Altteureu titled, “Seeing Asia at Altteureu,” can be viewed from now until Nov. 14.

The Constitutional Court has ruled the Ministry of National Defense’s designations of “seditious books” to be constitutional. This means that the ministry can prohibit books with content it believes seriously diminishes the armed forces’ spiritual fighting strength. It is regrettable that the Constitutional Court, which should be serving as a bulwark protecting basic rights, has instead given a free pass to a clear violation of those rights.

As the court itself acknowledged, Article 16, Item 2 of the military service regulations, which the ministry took as its basis for designating the books in question, places restrictions on the “right to know.” As a result, freedoms of scholarship, thought, and conscience can also be violated.

Even if a soldier is in a special situation where he or she must have basic rights such as freedom of residence and relocation restricted to some extent compared to ordinary citizens, the rule is that those restrictions should be limited to what is strictly necessary, and that the essential content of basic rights cannot be infringed upon. Guaranteeing basic rights without exception is the beating heart of constitutionalism.

Around 4pm, Oct. 26, the poet Song Kyung-Dong who were doing the sit-in on the top of the forklift truck with Kim So-Yeon, leader of the Kiryung workers in the old Kiryung company site since Oct. 15, fell down from the 2m height to ground, while he was being bothered by a home-delivery service company driver. Song missed his footstep on the height of the driver seat. One of his ankle bones was destroyed and he is now in a hospital.

Two workers of Yoon Jong-Hee, Oh Suk-Soon have been doing the 13th day hunger strike with no defined term, on the date of Oct. 26, 2010. The Kiryung workers have done the 30 days hunger strike in 2006, 94 days hunger strike in 2008. The Korean activists are relaying hunger strike in support of the Kiryung workers while the vice chairman of the metal trade union workers have been doing the hunger strike as a solidarity with Kiryung workers since Oct. 22, 2010.

Directed by former Hawaii newspaper journalist and independent Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Stephanie Castillo, this film is a tribute to Domingo Los Banos and the rest of the "Hawaii boys" of Filipino ancestry who fought in the U.S. Army's Second Filipino Infantry Regiment in World War II. Still in his teens when he served as an Army chaplain, Los Banos later became an educator and continued to see over his troop members after the war. Remember the Boys recognizes the power of overcoming racism with humor and group solidarity, and traces the young men’s wartime experiences, from boot camp to combing the hills of Samar Island for Japanese soldiers. The documentary also reflects a time when bonds that would endure a lifetime were forged, serving as a monument to "the boys" who came together and overcame prejudice in the military ranks.

Who would turn down a free trip around the world? That’s just what the Pacific Rim Film Festival has offered the local community every year for nearly two decades now. This year’s 22nd annual PRFF invites audiences once again to be entertained, inspired and enlightened by documentaries and feature films offering global glimpses of life. And all showings are free, with the exception of a special benefit event the last day of the festival.

Presented by George Ow Family Properties, PRFF 2010 will screen 18 films during the six-day event, held October 15-20, shown at three locations: the Del Mar Theatre, Rio Theatre and Cabrillo College Watsonville Center.

As in past years, all PRFF screenings are free except for the closing night benefit event. This year's benefit film is Those Who Came Before, the latest in the “Hawaiian Legacy Series” of documentaries by Eddie and Myrna Kamae, who will be present at the screening. The event features live music by the Keiki Palaka Band and a hula performance by the Te Hau Nui dance group at 7pm on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at the Rio Theatre.

As always, films originate from many areas of the world: India, Bolivia, Japan, China, Philippines, Mongolia, India, South Korea, Vietnam and the U.S. mainland and Hawaii are all represented this year. Selected screenings will be followed by free discussions and Q&A sessions with filmmakers.

Originally inspired by the Hawaii International Film Festival, the first Pacific Rim Film Festival was held in 1988 at the Del Mar Theatre. Films are chosen to reflect the festival's theme, “When Strangers Meet,” embodying PRFF’s dedication to promoting cross-cultural communication and understanding.

The blogger, nicknamed Boreum Doraegi, living in the Jeju Island, has photographed many beautiful or critical scenes of the nature and people's struggle against the naval base in the Gangjong village. The above three photos are his recent works on the Joongduk coast (1, 2) and Beobhwan port(3) next to the Gangjeong village. He took the photos when there were several big storms in the Jeju Island this year.

It is always wonderful to see an artist to be a witness for lives.

Japanese independent documentary filmmaker has been detained without any legitimate reasons more than for a week. This is a serious suppression not only of him, but also of Japanese media activists & independent filmmakers. Please keep your eyes on this affair and sign the petition.

Petitioners: the NDS and the Association Calling for
the Immediate Release of Mr. K (Free K!)

On August 22nd (Sunday), our friend and a member of the NDS (Nakazaki-cho Documentary Space), Mr, K, was taken into custody in a violent manner and arrested by detectives from the 3rd Section of the Security Police, in addition to having his home searched. Additionally, the following morning, the local office of the Kamagasaki Patrol Association and the editorial office of the People's News were subjected to a police search. According to police, the reasons given for the arrest are "the falsification of information on a license (resulting from a discrepancy found in the listed home address on the individual's driver's license)" and "the forgery of a stamped private document related to a rental contract (resulting from a simple mistake whereby the individual mistakenly wrote the name of his former guarantor on a contract at the time of contract renewal)," and the reason given for the search of the second and third aforementioned locations, is the unreasonable explanation that these locations were places that Mr. K had frequented in the past. Although such cases of arrest and detention on the basis of "light criminal charges," carried out by the Security Police are not well known by the general public, for individuals involved in social activism, these types of actions have become all too familiar, and such abuses of state power and political suppression have finally been unleashed on individuals involved in the expression of free thought. Furthermore, the term of this individual's detention has been further extended and he has been deprived of his visitation rights, preventing us from meeting with him in person.

As a documentary film maker and an expressive voice of the people, Mr. K, who is a second generation ethnic Korean and works as a day laborer in Kamagasaki, has gone to great lengths to expose many of the realities that the Japanese government has tried to hide and conceal, by using his video camera to shed light on such subjects. Although Mr. K is an ethnic Korean, who as a result is deprived of suffrage, he went to great lengths to document the struggle of the day laborers of Kamagasaki who had been denied their right to vote because of the unilateral actions of the City of Osaka to revoke these individuals of their certificates of residence, in his documentary film "Give Back the Certificates of Residence of the People of Kama (2010)." Despite this fact however, Mr, K has continued to work closely and to actively document this movement to restore the certificates of residency of these oppressed people.

Additionally, Mr. K has been involved in such activities as the Overwinter Struggle, an event that is held annually in Kamagasaki and the public parks of Osaka City, and he has documented the forced removal of the homeless tent community in Nagai Park in his film "A Large Flower Grows in Nagai Park (2008)," in addition to documenting gatherings held in remembrance of the events of the "April 3rd Incident," which occurred in his ancestral home of Jeju island. Furthermore, he has also worked to document for posterity the Korean Madang rituals that portray the Korean struggle for democracy, as well as capturing the final moments of Ryu-ou-gu Shrine, a location where ethnic Korean women had gathered to pray and share their tradition, and a location where the residents were recently subjected to forced eviction. This arrest is a grave action, which amounts to an attack by the state government on individuals who respect free speech, and it is an action that cannot be forgiven.

Furthermore, in July of this year, Mr. K had just recently become the plaintiff in a lawsuit against the Japanese government and the Obayashi Corporation, a construction contractor, and we believe the arrest of this individual amounts not only to the suppression of free speech, but to a politically motivated act of suppression as well. The impetus for this lawsuit came after Mr. K protested to his on-site employer's demands that Mr. K use his Japanese name, prompting Mr. K to file suit. This action by his employer exhibits a blatant lack of understanding and lack of repentance for the historical actions of the state of Japan, which forced the Korean people, under colonial and imperial rule, to adopt Japanese names as "subjects of the Japanese empire." In a day and age where deep rooted discrimination of ethnic Koreans still exists, and in a time when the history of the Second World War and colonial rule has continued to fade, we believe that Mr. K's claim raises an important question. If his detention continues to be extended, the court proceedings for this trial, which are scheduled to begin on September 16th, will be carried out with the plaintiff in absentia, and we are adamant in that we cannot forgive the infliction of such a grave injustice.

We demand that Mr. K immediately be released from detention. At the same time, we demand that all of the video tapes/records of his free expression that have been confiscated be returned to his possession. Through his pure and down to earth personality, Mr. K has been an inspiration to us all, and we sincerely ask that you provide us with your messages of solidarity and we highly appreciate any donations to his defense fund. We humbly ask for everyone's support and continued interest into this matter.

권씨는 다큐멘터리 영화를 만드는 표현자로 또 재일조선인2세의 입장에서 자신도 일용직노동자로 일하면서 카마가사키(오사카에 있는 일용직 노동자가 집중해서 사는 곳)에서 생활하면서, 일본이라는 국가가 은폐하고 억압해왔던 다양한 사람들과 존재의 모습을 카메라를 통해서 드러내는 작업을 해왔습니다. 예를 들어 카마가사키의 일용직노동자의 주민표가 오사카시에 의해 일제로 삭제되었던 것에 대한 투쟁을 그린 '카마의 주민표를 반환하라!"(2010)에서는 주민표가 없다는 이유로 선거권을 박탈당하는 상황을 보여주고 있습니다. 사실 권씨 자신에게도 재일조선인이라는 이유 때문에 선거권은 없습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 주민표 탈환운동과 함께 서서 기록을 해왔습니다. 그리고 그 외에도 카마가사키의 생존투쟁, 자신의 뿌리와도 연관이 되는 제주도의 4.3사건, 한국의 민주화투쟁과 마당극, 2008년 촛불집회, 그리고 오사카에서 최근 철거당한 제주도 무속신앙을 계승해온 용왕궁의 모습을 기록하고 편집해 왔습니다. 경찰은 이러한 기록이 담겨진 테이프와 작품을 모두 가져가 버렸던 것입니다.

또 권씨는 올해 7월 일본정부와 오오바야시구미 상대로 원고가 되어 소송을 걸었습니다. 이 재판은 권씨의 직장에서 갑자기 고용주로부터 일본 이름을 쓰도록 강제 당했던 것에 항의해서 일으킨 것입니다. 이 고용주의 행위는 일본 국가가 한반도에 대한 식민지 지배를 강행하는 과정에서 천황제지배를 관통시키고 조선 사람들에게 일본식 성씨와 이름을 가지게 만들고 "황국신민"으로서 사는 것을 강제했던 역사에 대한 완전한 몰이해와 반성의 결여 속에서 행해진 것입니다. 그것에 맞서 일본사회에서 재일조선인으로서 본명으로 살아가는 당연한 권리를 쟁취하기 위한 재판입니다. 이것은 아직까지 재일조선인에 대한 뿌리 깊은 차별이 남은 상황 속에서 또 일제가 한반도를 강점한지 100년이 되고 그 역사와 기억이 풍화해나가는 가운데 권씨가 일으킨 매우 중요한 투쟁입니다. 그러나 만약에 구치기간이 길어지면 9월16일에 예정되어 있는 제2회 공판이 본인부재인체로 행해질 수도 있습니다. 이 긴박한 사정을 비롯해 지금 권씨에 대해 행해진 모든 상황은 절대 용납될 수 없는 것입니다.
