'Minuteman III Protest: Midnight June 28/29, 2009 protest against the launch of a Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM)–the most destructive first strike missile in the U.S. arsenal. The "successful" target was the Ronald Reagan Missile Test Range, Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific.

Nuclear Missile Testing Continues in California
캘리포니아에서 핵 미사일 실험 계속되다

Santa Barbara, CA – The US military has announced a test of a Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile from Vandenberg Air Force Base on September 15. The Minuteman missile will carry a “dummy” nuclear warhead from Vandenberg to the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The test is scheduled less than three weeks after the official UN International Day against Nuclear Tests (August 29).

캘리포니아 산타 바바라-미국 군대는 9월 15일, 미뉴트맨 III 대륙간탄도 미사일 실험을 할 것을 발표하였다. 미뉴트맨 미사일은 밴던버그로부터 마샬 군도의 콰잘렌 환초에 “모조” 핵 탄두를 나를 것이다. 그 실험은 핵 실험들에 반대하는 유엔 국제일이 공식적으로 있은 지 3 주도 안되어 계획된 것이다 (8월 29일)

David Krieger, President of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, said, “The US moratorium on nuclear testing remains incomplete as long as we continue testing missiles designed to carry nuclear warheads. Minuteman III missiles are used solely to deliver nuclear warheads.”

데이비드 크리거, 핵 시대 평화 재단의 의장은 “미국의 핵 실험 중지는 핵 탄두들을 나르기 위해 고안된 미사일들을 실험하는 것을 계속하는 한 미완성인 채로 남아 있다. 미뉴트맨 III 미사일들은 단지 핵 탄두들을 싵기 위해 사용된다.” 라고 말했다.

The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation seeks the abolition of all nuclear weapons worldwide. The Foundation calls on the United States and all countries around the world to recognize their full obligation to halt all nuclear testing – not only of the warheads, but also of nuclear- capable missiles. The Preamble to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) calls upon the 189 countries that signed the NPT to facilitate “the elimination from national arsenals of nuclear weapons and the means of their delivery.”

Dr. Krieger added, “The US is demonstrating a stark double standard by condemning missile tests of other nations while continuing to conduct them on a regular basis itself. Continued testing of Minuteman III missiles by the United States sends a provocative message and encourages other countries to pursue their own nuclear weapon and missile delivery programs.”

On Sept. 14, M. S. in Japan and S. C. in Korea have sent the letters to the United States embassies in their own countries to show the solidarity with the Vandenberg protesters and opposition against the Minuteman ICBM launch on Sept. 15, 2010 (postponed to Sept. 17, later). The above is M. S. (Japan)'s letter to the United States embassy in Tokyo. M. S. says that 'Unlike in Seoul, the US embassy in Tokyo uses a framed email form' so M. had to send 3 times to send the letter to it. The second is S. C. (Korea)'s email to the United States embassy in Seoul. It is told that Australia activists also sent a letter to the United States embassy in Australia. I would like to send you some opposing voices collected in Japan to the Minuteman Ⅲ launch scheduled on Sep.15.

저는 9월 15일 예정된 미뉴트맨 Ⅲ 발사에 반대하여 일본에서 모아진 몇 반대의 목소리들을 보내고 싶습니다.

The list of the names of co-signers against the launch will be sent in the next email, so please never fail to receive that. Though the number is small, that does not mean at all majority of Japanese feel secured by the U.S. ICBMs.

발사에 반대하여 서명에 참여한 이들의 이름들은 다음 이 메일로 보내질 것이므로 반드시 받아 주시길 바랍니다. 그 숫자들이 적더라도 그 것이 대다수의 일본인들이 미국의 대륙간 탄도 미사일 발사 실험에 안전함을 느끼는 것임을 결코 의미하지 않습니다.

On the contrary, it would be reasonable for to believe that most of Japanese are sensitive and opposed to any missiles, as they are all capable of delivering nuclear warheads onto East Asia or elsewhere. ICBM test launches continue to be a excessive nuclear threat to our neighbors in this region, preventing them from their long-desired peaceful reunification, the same kind of which Germany has achieved 20 years ago already.

We, Koreans became to learn that the Vandenberg Space Command/ AFB will launch a Minuteman III high speed solid fuel ICBM that delivers the Thermonuclear warhead in the early hours of Sept 15 from Vandenberg to Kwajalein Atoll Marshall Islands, Pacific Ocean.

우리 한국인들은 밴던버그 우주 사령부/ 공군 기지가 9월 15일 이른 시간, 열핵 전쟁 탄두를 나르는 미뉴트맨 III 고속 고체 연료의 대륙간 탄도 미사일을 밴던버그로부터 태평양 바다 마샬 군도 콰잘렌 환초로 [실험] 발사할 것을 알게 되었읍니다.

Testing and developing thermonuclear warhead delivery systems is a violation of the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty, Article VI. We also hear that many peace-loving people including Fr. Louie Vitale and Sr. Megan Rice who were arrested on August 22 protesting another ICBM launch, have been oppressed during their peaceful protests against such aggressive tests and that some have even got the "lifetime ban and bar." It is a shame for the United States government who self-nominates as the world peacekeeper to conduct such destructive tests and oppress the peaceful voice of its own people.

열핵 전쟁 탄두 수송 시스템을 실험하고 발사하는 것은 비핵확산 조약 6조 위반입니다. 우리는 또한 8월 22일 또다른 대륙간 탄도 미사일 발사에 항의하다 체포됐던 루이 비탈 신부님과 메간 라이스 수녀님을 비롯한 많은 분들이 그러한 공격적인 실험들에 반대한 평화로운 시위들 도중 억압을 받았으며 몇몇은 심지어 "평생 금지 및 방책령."을 받았다는 것을 듣습니다. 세계 평화 지킴이로 자처하는 미국 정부가 그러한 위험한 실험들을 하고 자신의 민중들의 평화로운 목소리를 억압하는 것은 수치스런 일입니다.

The Marshall Islands that is told to be the place where more than 60,000 people live, has been the tragic target of innumerable nuclear and missile tests since 1946, of which the largest nuclear test that the U.S. ever conducted was included, as to be said by the Atomic Energy Commission, as "by far the most contaminated place in the world” in 1956.

Such tests have destroyed and would threaten not only the precious lives of people there but also the unspeakable lives under the sea such as corals, turtles, shells etc.

그러한 실험들은 그 곳 민중들의 소중한 생명들뿐만 아니라 바다 아래 산호들, 거북이들, 조개들 등 말못하는 생명들을 파괴해왔고 위협할 것입니다.

The corals in the Southeast Asian Sea have been already bleached for the global warming and the diverse ecology system is being destroyed there. It is lamentable that the United States government not only ignores the most urgent issue for the people in the world but also escalates the destruction of the biodiversity system in the Earth with such horrendous tests that would cause great harm to the future generation of human beings.

동남 아시아의 산호들은 이미 지구 온난화로 표백되었으며 그 곳의 다양한 생태 시스템은 파괴되어 가고 있읍니다. 미국 정부가 세계 민중들의 가장 절박한 이슈를 무시할 뿐만이 아니라 인류의 미래 세대에게 커다란 피해를 가져올 그러한 무시무시한 실험들로 지구의 생물 다양성 시스템의 파괴를 촉진한다는 것은 한탄스런 일입니다.

The United States government has bluffed out that such tests are for the provable attacks from Iran or North Korea but normal people with reasonable thoughts can hardly believe that those countries would ever attack the United States who occupies more than half of the defense spending among all the countries’ defense budgets combined. People also know that such bluffs are ultimately for the domination of the United States through chocking-off other countries’ oil lanes, such as China.

미국 정부는 그러한 실험들이 이란 또는 북한의 가능한 공격때문이라 속여 왔지만 합리적인 생각을 가진 정상적인 사람들은 그 나라들이 모든 나라의 합쳐진 국방 지출의 절반 이상을 차지하는 미국을 공격할 거라고 믿을 수가 없읍니다. 민중들은 또한 그러한 허풍들이 궁국적으로, 중국과 같은 다른 나라들의 석유길을 옥죄는 것을 통한, 미국의 지배를 위한 것이란 걸 압니다.

The Asia Pacific and Pacific Ocean is in danger because of reckless United States governments’ greed and lies. Many Koreans now know the news of the Vandenberg launches and shudder by the hypocrisy of the United States government who has always made the scapegoat of North Korea for her nuclear and missile tests.

아시아 태평양과 태평양 바다는 분별없는 미국 정부의 탐욕과 거짓말들로 위험에 처해 있읍니다. 많은 한국인들은 이제 밴던버그 발사들의 소식을 알며 북한의 핵과 미사일 실험들로 북한을 희생양으로 만들었던 미국 정부의 위선에 몸서리칩니다.

Such tests would impede the peaceful dialogues between the United States and North Korea who has long time demanded for it. [These are] Koreans’ demand[s] to the United States government to stop such tests, to close such dangerous bases, to respect the peaceful unification wishes of Korea through peace treaty and to care for the precious lives of human beings and other beings in the Earth.

그러한 실험들은 미국과, 오랫동안 평화로운 대화들을 요구해왔던 북한의, 평화로운 대화들을 방해할 것입니다. 그러한 실험들을 중단하고, 그러한 위험한 기지들을 폐쇄하고, 평화 조약을 통한 코리아의 평화 통일 염원을 존경하고. 지구의 인류 및 다른 존재들의 소중한 생명들을 보살피는 것, 이것들이 코리아인들이 미국 정부에게 요구하는 것입니다.

The Koreans will also watch whether the United States would exercise the guarantee of the free speech right of her own people. If it is proved out that she violates her own constitution and international law, the world will watch and protest to you. The United States government should rather convert the military spending for her own people’s welfare.

코리아인들은 또한 미국이 그 자신 민중들의 자유 발언 권리 보장을 집행하는지를 감시할 것입니다. 만약 미국이 자신 스스로의 헌법과 국제법을 위반한다면 세계는 당신을 감시하고 당신에게 항의할 것입니다. 미국 정부는 오히려 그 자신 민중들의 복지를 위해 군사 지출을 전환해야 합니다.

A loaded gun used in a crime is considered assault even if it is not fired. The violence is still there. The United States levies that same violence on the rest of the world through the presence of its missile facilities strewn across the Pacific. It’s the same loaded gun, but for the peoples of the Pacific, the terror is millions of times greater. We, peoples of the Pacific, should not have to endure this terror if the United States truly did stand for “peace and justice for all.”

범죄시 사용되는 장전되는 총은 발사되지 않더라도 공격으로 간주된다. 폭력은 아직도 그 곳에 존재한다. 미국은 태평양에 걸쳐 흐트러진 미사일 시설들의 존재들을 통해 나머지 세계들에 같은 폭력을 행세한다. 그것은 같은 장전된 총이나, 태평양의 사람들에게 그 폭력은 수백만 배 더 크다. 우리, 태평양의 사람들은, 미국이 진정으로 “모두를 위한 평화와 정의”를 상징한다면 이 폭력을 견뎌서는 안된다.

The word Pacific comes from the Latin word for “peace,” which was how the European explorers described these waters and her peoples. Ironically, these famously “peaceful” islands are profoundly affected by U.S. war policy. The Pentagon carries out plans daily that destroy reefs, contaminate soil and groundwater, decimate whales and dolphins with cerebellum-numbing sonar, annihilate cultures, and wipe out entire ecosystems. The launch of missiles like the ICBM from Vandenberg is just one of a multitude of destructive war exercises. The Earth and her peoples can no longer endure this insane way of life.

태평양이란 단어는 유럽 탐험가들이 그 물들과 사람들을 묘사했었던 라틴 단어 “평화”로부터 온다. 아이러닉하게도 이 유명한 “평화로운” 섬들은 미국 전쟁 정책에 의해 심대하게 영향 받는다. 미 국방부는 산호초들을 파괴하고 토양과 지하수를 오염시키고 소뇌를 마비시키는 음향으로 많은 사람들을 죽이고 문화들을 죽이며 전체 생태계들을 섬멸시키는 매일매일의 계획들을 실행한다. 밴던버그에서의 대륙간 탄도 미사일 실험들과 같은 미사일 발사는 무수한 파괴적인 전쟁 연습들의 하나이다. 지구와 그 곳에 사는 사람들은 더 이상 그러한 미친 삶의 방식을 견뎌낼 수 없다.

And plans are now in the works to enlarge the network of bases across the Asia-Pacific region. But resistance is building. We have had enough. Just look at our cousins in Okinawa. For sixty years, their island has endured the rapes, the crimes, the pollution, the constant roar of jets flying low at all hours of the day and night – because the U.S. has riddled the otherwise placid island with scores of its military facilities and tens of thousands of young American males. Okinawan protestors are legendary in the Asia-Pacific region for their fierce diligence, creativity, and sheer numbers. Though not reported in the American or European press, it has been the Okinawan resistance that has brought the U.S. plans to beef up bases in the region to a grinding stalemate.

And on the island of Guahan (Guam) in the western Pacific, a powerful resistance movement is rising like a Phoenix from the ashes. The young people of the island are leading a movement that opposes the Pentagon’s transfer of tens of thousands of troops and foreign laborers to their small island. Plans include a berth for a nuclear aircraft carrier that would destroy 71 acres of a vibrant reef; a state-of-the-art missile range that would augment the facilities at Vandenberg, Kauai, Kwajalein and Okinawa; and a land grab that would transform an expansive, sacred valley and archeological site into a live-fire shooting range. The whole thing would cost the U.S. between $13 and 20 billion. Wouldn’t that money be better spent on education and healthcare for the Americans who shelled out those tax dollars in the first place?

On June 6, 2010, the United States plans to launch a Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) from Vandenberg Air Force Base on the California central coast. The missile will likely carry one or more “unarmed” warheads to the Ronald Reagan Test Site in the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

The launch, the first of two planned for the month of June, will come just nine days after the completion of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference at the United Nations.

Nuclear Age Peace Foundation President, David Krieger, who attended the NPT Review Conference earlier this month, said, “U.S. testing so close to the end of the NPT Review Conference will make many countries doubt our sincerity in fulfilling our nuclear disarmament obligations under the NPT. President Obama has said that he wants to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in US security policy, but tests such as this one suggest that we are continuing with business as usual.”

Krieger continued, “When any country tests long-range missiles and nuclear weapons, it is more than just a test. It is a message to the world and perhaps to specific countries; it says in effect, ‘This is what we can do to you.’ If the US wants to lead the way to a world free of nuclear weapons, it needs to stop sending such provocative messages. In the US we are very aware of such messages when other countries test. We seem to have a blind spot in our thinking about our

South Korea's first home-grown rocket and satellite launch was a failure today. The $400 million rocket delivered its satellite payload far above its intended orbit. The cost of the satellite is not being mentioned in South Korean media, likely because they don't want the taxpaying citizens to be aware of the massive amounts of public funds lost on the failed mission.

"Since the 100kg scientific satellite does not have any on-board propulsion systems, if it fails to enter proper orbit there is no way to correct its trajectory," one expert said. He declined to say whether the satellite was lost or if it went into orbit, but cannot be found.

Not enough people in the South Korean peace movements are yet knowledgeable about space issues to the point where they were actively tracking this mission. After my recent trip there, and this failed launch, I would imagine that will begin to change.

One of the interesting things about this South Korean rocket launch is the hypocrisy connected to it. When North Korea recently launched a rocket and attempted to put a satellite in orbit both the US and South Korean governments went ballistic - pardon the pun. But when the shoe was on the other foot, no problem at all is proclaimed. This double standard is the reason that so many people around the world have such little respect for the US and its allies these days.

My mother always used to say, "What's good for the goose, is good for the gander."

On August 23 the US test-fired another Minuteman nuclear missile from Vandenberg AFB in California into Kwajalein Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. Then South Korea fireslaunches its first rocket. In both cases these two "good guy" countries are doing the same thing they scream at North Korea for trying to do. You can't have it both ways.

Why is testing nuclear rockets and putting satellites in orbit wrong for one country but OK for another? I guess the answer is: which side of corporate capitalism are you on?

US Arsenal of Hypocrisy Poised for Another Launch : Call for Local Protests on Weekend of August 22/23



The US arsenal of hypocrisy is poised for another launch from Vandenberg AFB in Southern California in the early morning hours of August 23. Our government lectures and threatens Iran and North Korea about the evils of nuclear weapons and then arrogantly continues to fire nuclear missiles from California into the Pacific Ocean.

The US will launch the high speed, hair trigger Minuteman III nuclear weapon delivery system from Vandenberg Space Command to Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The launch will be an operational test to verify the weapon system's reliability and accuracy.

There will be protests at Vandenberg AFB, as well as at the Air Force Space and Missile Command in El Segundo, CA, at the time of the launch. We urge people around the world to hold solidarity protests on either August 22 or 23 to expose the hypocrisy of this US nuclear test.

Why UN sanctions against North Korea or Iran but not the US? We can't let the world's biggest nuclear power get away with this "say one thing, but do another" politics any longer.

On June 29 Vandenberg Air Force Base will launch an ICBM Minuteman III , there will be a protest at the base, can you connect us with the Marshalles people who are opposing the occupation of their lovely islands?
