South Korea to strengthen ties with NATO
Published: March 11, 2009
SEOUL, March 11 (UPI) -- The South Korean Ministry of National Defense and NATO have announced plans to increase cooperation and open new channels of communication.
The ministry, working to improve ties with NATO, reported that it plans to "gradually increase" cooperation for ongoing security initiatives and take part in training programs offered by NATO.
South Korean defense officials, who recently sent a South Korean army colonel to the NATO Defense College for a six-month program, are following up on a 2008 National Defense Ministry white paper designed to establish new channels of dialogue with NATO.
"The (South Korean) government has decided to establish dialogue channels with the NATO and gradually increase its cooperation and exchange with NATO," the white paper said, according to the ministry.
