The Civilian Alliance Against the Redeployment of Troops to Afghanistan, composed of 69 organizations, hold the rally against the dispatch to Afghanistan while the bill on the agreement of dispatch to Afghanistan, was passed by the defense committee of the ROK National Assembly on Feb. 18. The bill is expected to be passed by the general meeting of the National Assembly on Feb. 25, 2010.

The ROK former Roh Moo-Hyun government has withdrawn its troops in 2007 after the death of sergeant Yoon Jang-Ho and incident of the kidnapping of more than 20 Christians in the Sammul church.

The people told today that the re-dispatch plan by Lee Myung-Bak government was the violation of promise with people that the government would not dispatch its troops to Afghanistan again.

Through the statement, the people strongly denounced against the expected passage of the bill on the agreement on the re-dispatch to Afghanistan by the general meeting of the National Assembly on Feb. 25, saying that, “The Afghanistan people have already considered the PRT (provincial Reconstruction Team) of which the Lee government is planning to send 140 along with 350 special forces under the cause to protect the PRT, as part of the occupation force, because of its collection of the information on the armed resistance forces and routine investigative search in villages, with the pretext of reconstruction.”

Lee Jung-Hee, Congress woman of the National Assembly, Democratic Labor Party saying that, “ The bill passed by the defense committee [on Feb. 18] reflected the government’s original bill in which the dispatch term was not a year but two years & six months.” pointed out, “ Even though there have passed numerous bills on the agreement on the dispatch, it has been allowed that the congress could submit its opinion again after a year. However the [current] government blocked the practice not to be done for two years & six months.” (citation & reference from the article by Koh Sung-Jin, Tongil news, Feb. 20, 2010)
