[Jeju Update]March 4: Candles for Peace Island were raised again in the Jeju City/ What the construction workers think

On March 4, the Pan-Island Committee for Prevention of Military Base and for Realization of Peace Island had a peace cultural event titled, “Peace Jeju without naval base.” The event held during the Life and Peace Fellowship members’ 100days’ peace pilgrim of the Gangjeong village was inspired by the decision of the LPF members whose original plan of walking from the Jeju to the DMZ was changed later as they realized urgent situation of the village.

About 200 citizens including some Gangjeong villagers with the yellow flags of ‘no naval base’ joined the joyful and inspiring event. Several young people’ bands had the concerts (See the video at the bottom of this link)and people prayed and made their resolution stronger to save the Jeju from the naval base construction.

Among some speakers, the speech by the Gangjeong village mayor, Kang Dong Kyun was remarkable when he connected the links between the oppressed history of the Jeju Island by the imperialism, represented by April 3 uprising and massacre in the Jeju Island, 1948 and the Jeju naval base plan that has been unofficially backed by the United States. He reminded the role of the United States in Korean history and emphasized that the struggle against the naval base plan is to save the Peace Island, from the U.S. strategy. (see the below video)

Lawyer Shin Yong-In passionately said the struggle against naval base plan is now more than matters on peace and environment but those on human rights and justice. Reminding the suffering of the villagers who have maintained struggle for near four years, he urged the Island people to all stand up against naval base construction.

Otherwise, the peace pilgrim by the Life and Peace Fellowship in the Jeju Island has been continued. It will last by March 7 and after that, the members will stay in the village for fulfilling 100days’ peace pilgrim in the Gangjeong village.

Construction going on: What the construction workers think

On March 3, 2011, the navy who had been installing tetra pods for days in the sea under the rocky cliff of the Meboori where the makeshift naval field office is located (near the Natggak, the downstream of the Gangjeong Stream) installed more tetra pods and even installed yellow hooks for web for the prevention of dirty water that would occur once construction buckles to start. The villagers say the web cannot properly function, of course. Even though the personnel from the construction companies of Samsung and Daerim say they are doing their best to protect environment but the hurried and enforced construction by 2014 cannot but be compulsive.

2011년 3월 3일 해군 기지 현장 사 무소가 있는 멧부리 바위 절 벽 아래 바다(강정천 하류인 냇깍 근 처) 몇 일동아 테트라파즈 설치 공사를 하던 해군은 더 많은 테트라 파드를 설치하고 오후에 오탁 방지막을 달을 노란 후크들까지 달았습니다. 물론 제 기능을 못할 오탁 방지막이 될 거라고 주민들은 말합니다. 해 군 및 공사 관계자들은 자신들이 환경을 보호하기 위해 최선을 다 한다 하지만 2014년까지 서둘러 강행될 공사는 많은 무리를 낳을 수 밖에 없습니다.

무엇보다 수면 위까지 보이는 콘크리트 테트라파 즈들 밑에서 아파하는 말 못하는 생물들이 애처롭습니다.




On March 4, it was discovered that the two workers of the Sunyoung Combined Engineering Co, one of the sub-contracting companies who had measured the heights for road construction in the Gangjeong port, Joongduk coast and Olle trail from coast to village, in the planned naval base area on March 3 were measuring the heights near the makeshift naval field office and Natggak on March 4, as well. The workers said the villagers who protested it that “Even though we are doing this because of our jobs, we also feel pain to see the villagers are suffering,” and a worker even hinted (?) the villagers what kind of measuring machine they should take a shot for photo to send to the media reporters.

같은 날 해군 기지 예정지인 강정 포구와 중덕 해안, 해안에서 마을로 가는 올레길 코스에서 도로 공사를 하던 하청업체 인 선영 종합 엔지니어링의 두 직원이 높이 측량을 하는 것이 마을 주민에게 발견되었 는데 이들은 다음날인 3월 4일 해군 기지 현장 사무소 근처와 냇각에서 역시 측량을 하고 있는 것이 관측되었습니다. 그 직원들은 항의하는 마을 주민에게 ‘직업 때문에 어쩔수 없이 이 일을 하고 있지만 주민들이 반대하며 고통 받고 있는 것을 보면 가슴이 아프다.” 라고 했으며 심지어 한 직원은 언론에 내려면 어떤 측량 기계를 찍으라고 권고까지 해줬다 합니다.











In the Gangjeong port, the construction to install the web to prevent dirty water started on March 4. According to a villager, it was told that the staff members of the Samsung and one of the subcontracting companies said they had requested the navy to postpone construction by 2015 but the navy insisted that it should be finished by 2014. One staff in charge of the construction of installing a web for prevention of dirty water even had a opinion (?) saying that, “Because more dirty water occurs during the dredge construction than in installing the web, it will be more effective for you to protest then.”


강정 포구에서는 오탁 방지막 공사가 시작되었 습니다. 항만 건설을 담당한 삼성 건설 직원과 한하청 건설 업체의 직원은 기업들이 2015년까지 공사를 미룰 것을 요청했으 나 해군은 부득이 2014년 까지 해야 한다고 했다 합니다. 오탁 방지막 공사를 담당하는 한 직원은 “오탁수 방지막을 설치할 때보다 준설 공사를 할 때 탁수가 많이 발생하기 때문에 그 때 반대를 하시면 더 효과를 보실 수 있을 것 같다.”고 까지 의견을 내놓더군요(?)





Hearing the construction companies’ frank expression, one cannot but remind the words of the attaché of the staff of the South Korean embassy in the Washington D.C., who said to the U.S. citizens who had called to the embassy, thanks to Bruce Gganon, to protest against oppression of the Gangjeong villagers and construction of the naval base: “You should talk to your government because they are the ones pushing us to do this.”


공사 업체 직원 들의 솔직한 심정 표현을 들으며, 지난 3월 브루스 개그논 덕분에 알려진 것인데,미국 수도 워싱턴의 남한 대사관 직원이 강정 주민들을 탄압하지 말고 제주 군사 기지를 짓지 말라는 항의 전화를 한 미국 시민들에 게 “이것을 하도록 우리를 밀어 부치는 것은 당신네 미국 정부니까 그 쪽에 전화하셔야 해요.” 권 고한 것이 생각납니다.

It is known that the dues for the constructions of the base expansion in Guam and Okinawa are by 2014 also and forceful constructions in Henoko and Takae in Okinawa are being done as well amidst the strong resistance by the residents there. If the naval base in the Jeju Island, the Peace Island that is the last button for peace in the Northeast Asia is constructed, we will be very sorry to our next generations and people in the Northeast Asia. We should make solidarity with all the people in the Islands in the Asia Pacific, including Hawai’i, Guam and Okinawa.

괌이나 오 끼나와의 기지 확장 공사도 2014년 기한으로 되어 있으며 오키나와의 헤노코와 타까에 에서도 주민들의 강력한 저항과 연대 호소속에 공사가 강행되고 있습니다. 동북아 마지막 평화 단추인 제주에 해군 기지가 들어선다면 후손들에게도 동북아 민중 전체에게도 미안한 마음 금할 수 없을 것입니다. 우리는 하와이, 오키나와, 괌을 비롯한 모든 아시아 태평양의 섬의 민중들과 연대해야 합니다.



One important thing that brings fury is that the navy is to set up the fence in the total planned naval base area sooner or later. After March 2, the naval base field office has been stepping for the basic construction for building the 2.5meter fence, removing an old and lower current fence surrounding the office area, without taking a break even during the weekend. On March 5, it was shown that the support beams to set up fence were carried inside the office area and small columns to set up the support beams were built by a very noise machine in an extended area from the base. 분노할 중 요할 만한 사실은 해군이 곧 해군 기지 예정지에 울타리를 치려 한다는 사실입니다. 3월 2일 이후 해군 기지 현장 사무소는 토,일도 쉬지 않고 현재의 상대적으로 낮은 사무소 주위의 담을 철거하고 2.5 미터의 높은 양철 담을 쌓는 기초 공사에 돌입하고 있습니다. 3월 5일 토요일, 담을 받칠 기둥들이 사무소 지역으로 운반되는 것이 보였으며 연일 쉬지 않고 빔을 박으려는 굴착 공사가 한창입니다. 3월 5일 엎데이트는 나중 에 정리

Two small white circles: Forth site for possible cultural relics

Otherwise, two small white circles that indicate the sites for possible cultural relics were discovered near a land of the Gangjeong port. It is the forth site following the sites discovered on Feb. 16, 23 and 24 after the Jeju Cultural Heritage Foundations’ hearing on the mid-term report on Feb. 15 when it said there had been little traces to be considered as the possible relic sites.

문화재 발굴이 진행 중인 강정 포구 근처 땅에서 3월 3일 하얀 동그라미 두 개가 발견되었습니다., 2월 15일 고려할 만한 유물 흔적이 없다고 한 제주 문화 유산의 2월 15일 중간 발표 이후 2월 16일, 2월 22, 23, 24일에 이른 하얀 동그라미가 쳐진 네번째 장소입니다.
