U.N. adopts resolution over N. Korea's human rights abuse

SEOUL, March 24 (Yonhap) -- The U.N. Human Rights Council adopted a resolution on Thursday to express concerns about North Korea's grave and extensive violations of human rights, Seoul's foreign ministry said.

The 47-member inter-governmental body passed a resolution with 'yes' votes from 30 member countries, expressing deep concerns over North Korea's "grave, widespread and systematic" violations of human rights.

Three countries, including China and Russia, were against the resolution, which was tabled by the European Union and Japan, while 11 member countries abstained.

The U.N. rights council renewed the mandate of its special rapporteur on North Korean human rights Marzuki Darusman and called for the North to allow him to visit the communist country. The resolution also urged Pyongyang to guarantee access of humanitarian aid.

North Korea has long been accused of human rights abuses, encompassing holding hundreds of thousands of people in political prison camps and conducting torture and public executions.
