Even on Saturday(March 5) and Sunday(March 6), the constructions in the naval base planned base area were continued by 6pm.

Tensions were brought when the villagers discovered on Sunday afternoon that the Daerim Industry Co. and its subcontracting company workers were building small steel columns that marked the sites to set up thick steel columns to support the 2.5 meter fence that would be built in the part of the planned naval base area, extending beyond the naval base field office area. The villagers including the mayor, Kang Dong-Kyun strongly demanded them to let the villagers meet the chief responsible personnel of the construction and despite that the Daerim Co. personnel attempted to continue to proceed construction. However, they had to stop construction for a while amidst strong protest by the villagers.

The Daerim personnel had not worn their safety hats but wore those later, being conscious of villagers’ cameras and got villagers’ protest when they took camera of the villagers.

From Monday, today, March 7, there are increasing tensions in the village. It is because not only fence construction but also active road construction of the concrete pavement to the coast are expected this week. The earth-flattening works that continued for days to make 4 lanes of wide road have been already almost completed from the vicinity of the naval field office area to the coast on Sunday and it is concerned about that the concrete-paving construction may be enforced with breaking rocks in the coast. The steel columns have already been being set up inside the naval base planned area.

In the sea near the Gangjeong port, it was discovered that the concrete supports were thrown down from the barge ship for the future maritime construction in the morning of Sunday and further throwing of tetra pods in the farther sea near the Gangjeong stream. The South Korean navy is trying to enforce construction by 2014 and mobilizing the Samsung(bay and harbor construction) and Daerim(land and part of bay and harbor construction).

If there were fences set up in the planned naval base area, the village and sea would be separated and the villagers and creatures in Gangjeong must be more stifled. Let’s save the Gangjeong that has kept its 400 hundred years of existence and its ecology-excellent environment including the UNESCO-designated soft corals.

If the naval base is set up in the village, the whole Jeju Island would be transformed into the air space war base and the peace in the Northeast Asia would be irrecoverably dangerous.

The village representatives would explain why there should not be the base in their village and Jeju Island in the meeting , as part of the nationwide opposition movement against naval base, with the members of the National Assembly on March 10 led by the Creative Korea Party, in the National Assembly.

The concerns and solidarity by the peace groups including the Life and Peace Fellowship who decided the 100days’ pilgrim in Gangjeong and the Frontiers and Solidarity for Peace And Reunification are being heightened.

Please show your concerns, inform to others and solidarity to the Gangjeong villagers.

강정: 연대 절박: 해군, 울타리 및 도로 공사 돌입

토요일, 일요일에도 강정 마을 해군 기지 예정지 공사는 오후 6시까지 쉬지 않고 지속되었습니다.

대림과 그 하청 업체들은 일요일 오후 해군 기지 현장 사무소 지역을 벗어난 곳에 해군 기지 예정지 지역 일부에 2.5 미터 울타리를 받칠 굵은 철주를 세울 곳을 표시하는 작은 쇠기둥들을 세우다 마을 주민들에게 발각되어 강한 항의를 받았습니다. 강동균 마을 회장님을 비롯한 주민들은 공사 책임자를 만날 것을 강력히 요구하였고 대림 관계자들은 책임자에게 연락이 안된다며 공사를 강행하려 했으나 결국 마을 주민들의 강한 항의속에 공사를 잠시 중단했습니다.

대림 관계자들은 안전모자를 쓰고 있지 않다 나중에 주민들의 카메라를 의식한 듯 후에 모자를 썼고 또한 항의하는 주민들을 카메라로 채증하다 주민들의 항의를 받기도 했습니다.

오늘 월요일, 3월 7일부터 강정 마을에는 팽팽한 긴장이 흐르고 있습니다. 울타리 공사 뿐만 아니라 해안 도로 콘크리트 공사 돌입까지 예상되기 때문입니다. 이미 현장 사무소 근처로부터 해안까지 몇 일동안 4 차선 넓은 도로를 만들기 위한 대지 평탄화 작업이 일요일 거의 완료되었고 이번 주 해안의 바위들을 파괴하며 강행될 지 모를 콘크리트 포장 공사가 우려됩니다. 또한 해군 기지 현장 사무소안에는 이미 철주가 세워지고 있습니다.

강정 포구 쪽 바다에는 일요일 오전, 앞으로의 해양 공사를 위해 바지선에서 콘크리트 받침대들을 떨어뜨리는 것이 발견되었고 냇깍 쪽에도 더 먼 바다 까지 테트라 파즈(일명 삼발이) 투척 공사가 진행되었습니다. 해군은 2014년까지 공사를 완료하려 삼성(항만 공사)과 대림(육상 및 한만 공사)를 동원, 무리한 행보를 보이고 있습니다.

해군 기지 예정지에 울타리가 세워지면 마을과 바다가 분리하게 되어 강정 주민분들과 생물들은 더욱 숨통이 조일 수 밖에 없습니다. 400년 설촌과 유네스코 지정 연산호등 유수의 생태 우수 자연 환경을 지켜온 강정을 구합시다.

강정에 해군 기지가 들어서면 제주도 전체가 우주 항공 전쟁 기지로 변하게 될 것이며 동북아 평화는 돌이킬 수 없이 위태로워집니다.

마을 대표분들은 해군 기지 공사 강행 반대 전국화 움직임의 하나로 창조 한국당에서 이끈 3월 9일~10일 국회의원들 모임에서 왜 강정과 제주에 해군 기지가 들어서면 안되는가를 국회에서 설파할 예정입니다.


또한 100일 강정 순례를 결정한 생명 평화 결사와 개척자, 평화와 통일을 여는 사람들을 비롯한 평화 단체들의 관심과 연대 노력이 전국적으로 높아지고 있습니다.
