Prague Town Hall bans Sunday march against U.S. radar
Prague - The Prague Town Hall today banned a march by opponents of the
construction of a U.S. radar base that was to be held in Prague centre on Sunday
when U.S. President Barack Obama will be visiting the city, the Town Hall said.
The Town Hall justified the ban saying it would affect traffic and collide with
certain security measures to be taken in connection with Obama's visit and the
EU-U.S. summit.
The organisers say, however, they will not respect the ban and will try to march
along the announced route.
The city previously banned a demonstration in Jan Palach Square on Sunday
afternoon whose participants were also to pass through the city.
The organisers expected some 2,000 people to take part.
The anti-radar demonstration organisers were allegedly proposed another route,
but they rejected it.
"The new route would challenge the purpose of the event, therefore we decided
not to accept it," Jan Majicek, from the No to Bases initiative, told CTK.
He said the ban is not consistent with law.
The United States wants to build a radar base some 90km southwest of Prague and
a base with ten interceptor missiles in Poland within its anti-missile shield.
The radar base is rejected by almost 70 percent of Czechs according to the
latest opinion polls.
The Czech Republic has signed two treaties on the project with the former
president George Bush's administration last year.
