'Jeju was announced as the venue for the 2012 IUCN World Conservation Congress on Nov. 26, 2009.'
According to recent Jeju media such as Jeju Sori, Sisa Jeju (Below content in ‘ ‘ was arbitrary translated):
'for the successful holding of coming 2012 World Conservation Congress (WCC), the Jeju Island, Ministry of Environment, ROK would conclude the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on March 5, 2010, in Jeju
It is heard that about 1,500 people would join the event, including Lee Man-Eui, Minister of the Environment, Kim Tae-Hwan, current Island governor, Julia Marton-Lefèvre, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Director General, WCC Pan-Island supporting committee members and Island people, on the MOU day.
On the day of MOU conclusion, report on the driving process, conclusion of MOU, and special lecture by Julia Marton-Lefèvre, IUCN Director General are programmed followed by the joint press interview.
[…]
By the chance of the event, the Jeju Island is planning to express its firm will to gather the Island people and to successfully hold the WCC, and to broadly spread the public announcement on the Jeju-hosting WCC.
The World Conservation Congress (WCC), sponsored by the IUCN is called ‘environment Olympic’ for its great size meeting in which 180 countries, 1200 groups and 10,000 people join every four years to discuss the nature preservation, biology diversity and climate change.
Having of the broad international influence, it is composed of exhibition, forum such as the round table meeting and members’ general meeting and provides the space for discussion on the broad area of the Earth environment issues.
The Jeju Island is planning to open the leaders’ Jeju environment forum for search of the agendas, for laying out for the supporting law for WCC, for laying out a roadmap for the preparation of the holding, for development of main logo on WCC Jeju, and for organizing of the preparatory coordinating committee on WCC.'
How Hippocratic it is to hold the environmental Olympic while the plan of the Jeju naval base has been long driven since 2002, despite many research results of the clear threat to already endangered corals, creatures in water & rocks and people living with them !
