1. Natgiliso 냇길이소
Artist Kim guided me to the Natgiliso. It is the spot that the Gangjeong stream, that the Gangjeong is proud of the abundance and cleanness of its water, starts here. It is the spot that the source of the name of the village, Gangjeong came. Gang means ‘river’ and ‘Jeong’ means water. The water flowing underground from the top of the Hall Mt. begins to expose itself through the rocks and falls down to the pond where the water forms the stream and flows again toward sea. According to Kim, it is the only spot in the Jeju Island that the underground water springs outward. The water that starts here has supplied the 70% of water demand in the Seogwipo area where the Gangjeong has become to belong to. If the naval base is set up, the water will be contaminated by the kinds of missile rocket fuels and chemicals that would come from the base.

-Natgiliso-
The Natgiliso, as the source of the Gangjeong stream, preserves the clear water for all the four seasons. Its name came from the meaning that the pond (So) has the ‘four (Nat)’ things ‘fall, rock wall, sweet fish, and clear water’- considered to be the ‘lucky signs (Gili).’ One can often see the flocks of mandarin duck and
spot-billed duck (Anas poecilorhyncha) here. Beside the Natgiliso, there is the Natgilisodang (* dand means something ‘place’) where a tree of
Elaeocarpus sylvestris var. ellipticus (담팔수(膽八樹), the domestically second oldest tree, is considered as the sacred.

The blackened spot in the rock wall that Kim indicates is the area the water starts to flow.

The water is emerald color when it is a sunny and clear day. Today, it was a little cloudy but the color was still beautiful.

2. 2nd Day in Mr. Koh and Ms. Kim's Tomato Green House

고와 김 부부의 토마토 그린 하우스에서의 두번째 날

After visiting Natgiliso, I and artist Kim went to Mr. Koh’s tomato green house to help the couple and Mr. Yang who has also helped them. The couple, at first, cordially rejected (?) my help because yesterday, I picked off many unripe tomatoes, still slowly working and not so pleasing them. Yang instructed me that I should pick off the 110% ripe tomatoes. Mr. Koh whom I more trusted than Mr. Yang said to me, the minimum should be 80%. So I carefully calibrated my eyes to the color of tomatoes to 82%. That worked today:)

Ms Kim, wife of Mr. Koh. Mr. Koh is proud of his nine year younger wife who is always in front of the protests against the naval base plan.

Mr. Koh whose hands met one of the busiest seasons and need any helpers for harvesting his red tomatoes. He was one of 23villagers who started the struggle against the naval base in Gangjeong.

Mr. Yang, a movie critic, who dared the physical struggle with the police on March 20. He said he could not stand the gate the navy set up after Jan 18 raid. He got the fine of 5,000,000 won (about $4,200) for his struggle on March 20. But he said he would never give that money to the navy. He said he is ready to fight to the end against the naval base plan.

Mr. Jung who guided Mr. Kim and me to Mr. Koh's green house house while he saw us visiting the tents of vigil.

3. Tombs to be moved for the Naval Base plan?

해군 기지 계획으로 옮겨가야 할 무덤들?
After working an hour in Mr. Koh’s green house, the couple and Mr. Yang guided me to the tomb nearby the couple’s green house. Koh says, the villagers are infuriated by these kind of Navy’s behavior that despite the fact that the villagers haven’t sold their lands for the opposition of naval base, the navy has already incorporated their lands for the naval base business plan.

(Translation of the board as the below)
'Tomb number 14-Please never damage this notice board'
This area was incorporated into the Jeju naval base (civilian-military complex beauty harbor for tour) business zone therefore the change of the burial site of the tomb is unavoidable. So if you have the relationship with this tomb or if you know the related persons, please report to the below address

1. a copy of the resident registration 2. a copy of one’s family register
3. an attested copy of the removal of the deceased from the resident registration
4. a written copy of the clan register

Compared to the tomb in the photo above, that is located in the deep inlet from the roads so that people can easily miss it, the navy did not set up that kind of the notice board in the tomb in the photo below. The villagers say it is located along the Olle where the tourists often pass and the navy did not want them to see its infuriating notice board. The small wooden board in the right side was made by the villagers. It says, “Way to the Joongduk, the Sea of Peace…Peace Post box”
