While people are making the movement for the prompt release of a movie critic, Yang Yoon-Mo, who was violently and inhumanly arrested on April 6 and got the court’s restraint decision against him on April 8, people’s protest against naval base was continued in the Gangjeong village. There was the first stirring maritime protest against the forceful Jeju naval base construction in the Gangjeong village in the morning on April 9, 2011.

A leader of group called Frontier threw down his body in scuba diving costume & flipper and swam toward a barge ship that was installing a web for the prevention of dirty-water, the preliminary process before dredging, near the naval field office- located Metboori.

About 15 villagers and young people from the peace groups supporting his inspiring protest watched and cheered on his action that started around 10:20 am with a group prayer, song and his statement, ended around 12:30pm when people welcomed his safe returning back with shouts.

The leader named Song arriving to the ship climbed up to ship’s crane and ship body demanded the stop of illegal and forceful naval base construction that has not been without the Gangjeong villagers agreement but with strong protests and that destroys the UNESCO protected soft coral habitat sea. When his demand was not accepted, he repeated to climb up ship crane again.

Around 11:45 am, the people in the land, concerning his safety made a verbal agreement with the personnel of the Woochang, sub-contract company of the Daerim Industry, who flocked to the coast cliff that his safe return should be guaranteed in exchange of the day’s construction stop by 2:30pm. The company personnel said they needed time by then to withdraw all the construction equipments.

After confirmation on it, Song returned to the coast. The Seogwpo maritime police corresponded him from the barge ship. According to Song later, the police first said to him that they would escort him but changed their words later they would arrest him. Song resisted them and swum alone to the cost and informed the story to the people.

He and other people stayed in the coast by 2:40 pm to make sure the construction was stopped as the promise with the company personnel. But the company did not keep the agreement but rather was told that they would continue construction by 6: 30 pm.

People were infuriated and made a protest in front of the naval field office for an hour to expose the lies of the navy and construction companies to the villagers and olle tourists walking the roads from 3:30 to 4:30pm. In the evening, there was a joyful music concert, sponsored by the members of the Life and Peace Fellowship members. It much helped to thankfully recover people’ energy again and strengthen the community. The below are some portions from that concert scene.
