Pentagon And NATO Apply Afghanistan-Pakistan War Model To Africa
Rick Rozoff

The New Year began with three North Atlantic Treaty Organization soldiers killed in Afghanistan and 20 people, all portrayed as militants, killed in four American missile strikes in northwest Pakistan. The third drone missile attack killed four people attempting to rescue and remove the bodies of the victims of the first, a technique used by the U.S. and NATO in their war against Yugoslavia in 1999.

The West's war in Afghanistan and Pakistan is currently the longest, largest and deadliest in the world. Fatalities among U.S. troops, non-U.S. NATO and allied forces, Afghan National Army soldiers and anti-government fighters reached a record high last year: 498, 213, 800 and an unknown number (by U.S. and NATO accounts well into the thousands), respectively. The United Nations estimated 2,400 Afghan civilians were killed in the first ten months of last year, a 20 percent increase over the same period in the preceding year. Approximately a thousand people were killed by U.S. drone missile strikes in Pakistan.

It says something discouraging about a world of almost 200 nations that perhaps no more than half a dozen countries - so-called rogue states (alternatively Condoleezza Rice's "outposts of tyranny") - have voiced opposition to the war.

Washington's self-designated global war on terror (sometimes capitalized), in recent years more politely and antiseptically called overseas contingency operations, has not diminished in intensity but rather escalated in breadth and aggressiveness from West Africa to East Asia and against targets not remotely related to al-Qaeda, which has proven as nebulous and evasive as the West portrays it being ubiquitous.

From 2001 to the present the U.S. has engaged in and supported military operations against Marxist guerrillas in Colombia and the Philippines, ethnic Tuaregs in Mali, nominally Christian insurgents in Uganda and Shiite Houthi militia in northern Yemen in the name of combating...al-Qaeda. The Wahhabist school of extremism that characterizes al-Qaeda and analogous groups derives its doctrinal inspiration and material support from Saudi Arabia, yet last October Washington announced a $63 billion arms package with the kingdom, the largest foreign weapons deal in American history.

(Global Network against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, www.space4peace.org)는 최근 제주의 저항을 사이트의 탑 이슈로 올리며 많은 세계인들에게 제주 해군 기지 건설 반대를 위해 저항하는 주민들 및 도민들을 위해 연대할 것을 촉구하고 있습니다.

[Jeju Update] The Sun rose again on the first day of a new year in the Jeju Island

The workers in the Jeju Island have been taking a tent vigil to demand their basic labor rights in front of the Island hall since Nov. 23. They included those from the bus transportation company, Apartment management, medical institute, and Island provincial dance institute. The dancers were in charge of the tent vigil on the first day of a new year.

A dancer made a snowman wearing a sign that says, ‘abolish unjust lay-off.’The chairman of their small union-seven members-was laid off during the struggle in which the dancers have demanded the resignation of the institute’s president who have performed arbitrary management against the dancers’ collected democratic opinions.

The dancers were doing the tent vigil since June, 2010 and gathered their struggle into the Pan-Island workers’ struggle in a tent vigil since Nov. 23. Two children of a woman dancer have also visited the tent.

The five small baby snowmen were New Year’s gift for them from a worker.

Otherwise, some photos from the Joongduk coast on the first day of a new year. It is told that the navy is planning to work on the fattening sea bottom before the construction of sea wall this month. If the construction is enforced according to their plan, this pristine landscape cannot be seen any more. However people’s struggle to save the Island of Peace will never be faded. Rather it will grow bigger in the New Year.

HOW DRONES USE SPACE TECHNOLOGY

This video is a good example of how drones use space technology to fly their deadly missions.

The Global Hawk used by the U.S. Air Force can fly at an altitude of about 18,000 meters, far higher than the cruising altitude of passenger planes. Using high-performance sensors and radar, it can monitor an area with a maximum radius of about 550 kilometers. And since there is no flight crew, it can stay aloft for more than 30 hours.

There can be no doubt that drones, and the satellites they use t0 direct them, can be called weapons in space.

Govt to study U.S. drone for surveillance
Dec. 31, 2010

The Defense Ministry has decided to begin full-scale research from fiscal 2011 into whether unmanned aerial vehicles should be introduced for surveillance of China and North Korea, government sources said.

The ministry will send senior Self-Defense Forces officers to study how the U.S. military uses and maintains the state-of-the-art high-altitude Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk, the sources said.

The introduction of unmanned drones would beef up the SDF's ability to monitor the Chinese Navy's rapidly expanding activities in the seas around southern Japan, as well as the volatile Korean Peninsula.

The ministry's research will focus on assessing the drone's merits, including cost-effectiveness, according to the sources.

The drones, which can make long flights and do not put military personnel at risk, are widely used by U.S. and British forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. The German military plans to begin using drones soon.

The government has already expressed willingness to introduce surveillance drones. The midterm defense buildup program from 2011, approved by the Cabinet on Dec. 17, clearly stipulates the ministry will study a comprehensive surveillance system over a wide range of areas, taking into consideration a variety of new technologies, including space-based systems and unmanned drones, that would allow it to flexibly respond to the changing security environment.

The ministry plans to make a decision on the drones by the end of fiscal 2015, the last fiscal year for the latest midterm defense buildup plan, the sources explained.

After the massive earthquake in January in Haiti, U.S. drones were used extensively to survey the damage.

The Global Hawk is about 14.5 meters in length, with a wingspan of about 40 meters. If deployed, it will be the first large unmanned aircraft deployed by the SDF. One Global Hawk, without sensors, costs about 2.5 billion yen.

According to a senior ministry official, three reconnaissance drones would be necessary to cover all of Japan's territory and surrounding waters.

When the cost of ground facilities, including headquarters, is factored in, the initial layout is estimated to be several tens of billions of yen, the ministry official said. As these are unmanned vehicles, post-deployment costs will gradually decline after the steep initial price tag, ministry sources said.

However, some senior SDF officials have expressed concern over the introduction of unmanned drones, saying it could result in cuts in SDF personnel. Currently, the Maritime Self-Defense Force's P-3C reconnaissance planes are Japan's main surveillance aircraft.

New options on Futenma under review / Relocation to Hokkaido, Honshu eyed
Jan 1, 2011

The government has begun studying the feasibility of transferring some functions of the U.S. Marine Corps' Futenma Air Station in Okinawa Prefecture to one or more candidate sites in Hokkaido and Honshu, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.

The proposal to relocate some training functions of the Futenma station's helicopter unit aims to help reduce the burden that hosting U.S. military bases places on residents of the prefecture.

Government sources familiar with the matter made the disclosure Thursday.

The transfer of the Futenma functions--which if effected would be the first of its kind--would do much to reduce the hazards posed by the Futenma facility, which is located in a densely populated area, the sources said.

Under consideration as candidate sites for the transfer are a number of Ground Self-Defense Force training areas in Honshu, Kyushu and Hokkaido, according to the sources.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan, during a visit to Washington scheduled for spring, will ask for the United States' cooperation in alleviating Okinawa Prefecture's base-hosting burden, including the possible transfer of the helicopter unit's training functions outside the prefecture, they said.

Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa has instructed government officials concerned to begin looking into the feasibility of the proposed transfer.

A major mission of the Futenma helicopter unit is the transportation of ground troops, the sources said.

The unit is responsible for flying troops to Camp Hansen and other training sites in the north of Okinawa Island, where integrated ground- and air-squad maneuvers are conducted, they said.

The leading candidate sites for the transfer are large or midsize GSDF training areas suitable for such maneuvers, the sources said.

Specifically, those training grounds include Yausubetsu in northeastern Hokkaido, to where U.S. forces' live-weapons training has been moved from Okinawa Prefecture under a 1996 Japan-U.S. agreement; Ojojihara in Miyagi Prefecture; Kita-Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture; Higashi-Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture; and Hijudai in Oita Prefecture, the sources said.

Also under consideration is the rotational use of midsize GSDF training grounds on Honshu and Hokkaido that already host joint Japan-U.S. ground exercises, they said.

In talks with U.S. President Barack Obama in November, Kan pledged to make "utmost efforts" to resolve the Futenma issue.

Okinawa Gov. Hirokazu Nakaima, who was elected for a second four-year term in November, has been steadfast in his calls for relocating the Futenma facility outside the prefecture.

Officials in the government and the ruling Democratic Party of Japan hope Nakaima will soften his stance if his persistent demands for alleviating the prefecture's base-hosting burden are met.

Any plan to transfer the Futenma functions will be dependent on the consent of the United States, the sources said.’

The government plans to negotiate a list of candidate sites with the United States by the end of 2011, while also consulting with local governments concerned, they said.

Plans to move some of the U.S. forces' exercises out of Okinawa Prefecture have been floated several times, but have never materialized because the United States has not been satisfied with the suitability of the transfer sites proposed, the sources said.

The sources said that when the GSDF conducted a joint maneuver with the U.S. Marine Corps in December at the Kirishima training ground, which stretches across the Miyazaki-Kagoshima prefectural border, the Defense Ministry requested the participation of the Futenma helicopter unit on a trial basis--with a view to a partial transfer of its operations to Kirishima--but was turned down by the U.S. side.

The ministry made a similar request regarding a joint exercise scheduled for February to March this year at the Aibano training ground in Shiga Prefecture, which was also rejected by the United States, they said.

---------------
The 32nd annual Feast of the Holy Innocents Retreat and Witness at
STRATCOM was a low key affair by an measurement, never breaking the
double digit mark until our closing ceremony on Tuesday Dec 28th when
11 folks showed up.

It began with a reading of the Gospel of Matthew's Christmas narrative
at noon on Monday, Dec 27th at the main gate of Offutt AFB in Bellevue
NE, just south of Omaha. Offutt is the home of STRATCOM. The most
dangerous place on the planet.
http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=8810
http://www.resistinc.org/newsletters/articles/stratcom-nebraska

After the reading of Matthew's Christmas narrative we got in our cars
and re- gathered in the basement of St John's Church on the campus of
Creighton University. We spent the next 22 hours renewing old
friendships, building links of solidarity and community with
each-other, telling stories of Christmases passed and reflecting on
the meaning of it all - in our personal lives and in the nation we
live. Meals were prepared by folks at the Omaha CW. Mass was
celebrated by Fr Jim Murphy on Tuesday a.m. in the basement chapel at
St John's right before we headed out to the base.

After Mass we returned the the main entrance of Offutt AFB for our
annual presence.

It was a simple, poignant, very humble, seemingly unnoticed presence.
Given the reality of what takes place at Offutt and the mission of
STRATCOM - our efforts surely felt pathetic. Not much different from
the impression the first Christmas made on world scene.

Yankton CWer Mike Sprong began with reading Mathew's Christmas story,
than sharing how this years Feast of Holy Innocents Witness marked the
30th Anniversary of his first act of civil disobedience by his
crossing the line at Offutt in this very spot on Dec 28, 1980. Mike
said he was one of the youngest people gathered at Offutt in 1980. He
was also the youngest person gathered this year at the base....

The whole effort at the gate took no more than 20 minutes, most of
which was captured in the two below video links.

[Jeju Update] An eve party for a marriage of a villager's son

A Gangjeong villager’s son will marry to a woman on Jan. 1. By the tradition of the village, all the villagers gathered to the village courtesy hall to celebrate him for two days before the marriage ceremony. The villager has been the head of the vigil tent against the naval base near the makeshift naval base area for near a year. The father and son wanted to be taken a photo shouting with, ‘no naval base!’

ARMY HELICOPTERS ON OKINAWA DRIVING PEOPLE CRAZY

U.S. Army helicopters on Okinawa are driving the public crazy. Here is a brief comment by Global Network board member M. S. from Japan about this video:

This video shows how the U.S. helicopters are harassing villagers in Takae by flying very low or carrying concrete blocks or fully-armed soldiers on the heads of villagers. Several days ago they blew over a vigil tent set up the villagers by hovering right over it. At the end of the video, the past record of U.S. military's aircraft crashes in Okinawa are shown.

This is the same brutality of power as is seen in Jeju.

( the discussion before the work began 작업이 시작되기 전 토론입니다. )

Strangely, In takae,Okinawa as well, they resumed the work of constructing new helipads
this dawn. I received email telling that from Tokyo.
It is as if to almost syncronize with the move in Jeju.
Construction workers and local agency of the Defense Ministry, more than 100
in total, came early this morning and placed a fense to ward off locals, and began their work.
It is such an isolated area, so they must have intended this Xmas and new year season. (M.S. Japan, Dec. 23, 2010)

=Urgent solidarity statement from Japan against the planned naval base
on Jeju Island=

We oppose the construction plan of a navel base on Jeju Island, Republic of Korea.
The government of ROK is about to force through the startup of the construction of a naval base on Jeju Island despite the opposition by local people. We, those who seek peace in northeastern Asia, demand the cancellation of the startup of the construction work and the thorough withdrawal of the naval base plan.

Constructing the planned naval base would surely deal an irretrievable blow to the coral reel in the sea around the island, which is registered among the World Natural Heritages by the UNESCO, as well as destroy the life of locals and their fishery.

It is inevitable that the planned new military base would become a hub for deploying ‘Missile Defense’-system-equipped Aegis destroyers and for port calls by such watships, being used not only by South Korea but also by the US and possibly by Japan. Such a naval base plan is for strengthening the military encirclement against China. So if constructed, that would obviously amplify tension in this area, through which process Jeju Island could become a target of military attack, with local people’s life put in danger rather than under protection.

Currently in Northeast Asia, military tension is rising high. The countries concerned are on the path to military intimidation against each other and military buildup, instead of cancelling military drills on their parts and easing tensions, which should be rightfully dealt with by those countries. This situation is feeding military industrial complex with their desirable markets there.
We should end this residue of the Cold War remaining in North East Asia and set in place sustainable peace. For that purpose, it is the installation of military-exercises free zones, signing of peace treaties, and regional disarmament measures that is needed. Additionally, it is necessary to reduce and then remove all the military bases of foreign forces in this region.

There is noo need of military bases on Jeju Island, South Korea, nor in Henoko, Okinawa. No need of a new military base in North East Asia. We must change the sea of distrust into that of trust, the sea of confrontation into that of peace.

We send our hearty cheers in solidarity to residents on Jeju Island who are opposed to the planned base construction, and demand that the administration of Republic of Korea fully withdraw its construction plan of a naval base on Jeju Island.

Dec.28th, 2010

On behalf of the co-sighners,
Koji Sugihara
No! to nuclear and missile campaign

Co-signers of the above statement against

NUJP calls out US troops for 'arrogant' behavior

Tuesday, 21 December 2010 05:30

PM Fidelis Angela Tan

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) have criticized the so-called "arrogant" behavior of American soldiers towards journalists in Zamboanga.

The reporters were covering on Monday a visit by retired general Edilberto Adan, executive director of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) Commission, to the Western Mindanao Command headquarters.

The NUJP cited the "totally illegal manner" in which the American soldiers ordered the journalists to desist shooting footage right outside the task force headquarters.

According to NUJP director and Philippine Daily Inquirer correspondent Julie Alipala, an American solider supposedly told a local TV reporter, "I am ordering you not to take footages."

When another reporter asked what the basis for the order was, the American replied: "I don’t understand you but don’t make me take your camera."

When sought for comment, Westmincom spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Randolph Cabangbang said that the reporters were in a secure facility, and that "persons going there need clearance" to shoot photos or video footage.

Alipala however, pointed out that the reporters were technically outside of the Westmincom headquarters.

"Even granting Cabangbang’s explanation...[the U.S. soldiers] should have conveyed it to their local counterparts who could then have relayed these concerns to the journalists concerned," said NUJP.

“We believe that ultimate authority over the facility resides in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine government, unless they have conceded this authority to what would then essentially be foreign occupiers,” the group added.

The NUJP added that the slight against the journalists was also a slight against the Filipino people.

“We ask the VFA Commission to conduct an investigation into this matter for this arrogant behavior of foreign visitors goes beyond mere security concerns and strikes at the very heart of our sovereignty as a nation and a people,” said the journalists’ group. “We also demand that the VFA Commission put the Americans in their proper place and warn them against any repetition of this arrogance. To let this incident pass is to abrogate our rights and liberties to foreigners.”

Hundreds of U.S. troops have been stationed in Mindanao since 2001, under the controversial VFA. TheMindanao Examiner reports that numerous complaints have been made against U.S. troops stationed in Zamboanga City, Sulu, and other parts of Mindanao but these have not been heeded by the VFA Commission.

As of press time, the U.S. has yet to issue a statement on the incident.

Women’s group: Terminate VFA

Over the weekend, the World March of Women-Philippines also came out with a statement published in the Inquirer asking President Benigno Aquino III to “give the Filipino people a genuinely ‘Merry Christmas’ by terminating the VFA.”

“We cannot really enjoy the holidays while we are kept anxious and apprehensive about the way the Presidential Commission on the VFA is reviewing the agreement and about the possibility of the review outputs coming out before the year ends,” said the statement.

“We are afraid that the commission’s decision would come like a thief in the night, as did the transfer of US Marine Lance Cpl. Daniel Smith before the end of 2006, when everybody was busy [during Christmas and New Year],” the group added, referring to the controversy when the U.S. refused to hand over custody of Smith, who was accused of raping a Filipina, to the Philippine government.

The group also said that the VFA, which has been in effect for around 11 years, “has not served the Filipino people’s interests” but has instead “put our women in greater danger of sexual violence.”

“Moreover, contrary to [Adan’s] statement last November that the VFA ‘is basically a part of what we call the national security strategy,’ [we believe] that the VFA in fact is a U.S. national security strategy, serving the U.S.’s economic interests, and abetting U.S. wars of aggression,” said the group.
