[Jeju Resource] Air view of the 2011/2012 Jeju naval base construction plan by the Jeju Naval Base Business Committee
________________________________

On May 10 which was Yang Yoon-Mo’s 35th prison fast day and a holiday-a commemoration day of Buddha’s birthday-construction of the concrete structures to be dropped into the sea to kill the lives including the UNESCO designated soft corals was continued.

Tens of cement mixer trucks flooded into the construction site from the morning to the late afternoon. Song Gang-Ho, the leader of the group called the Frontiers and others protested against that move for hours. The company personnel said they would visit the temple after works (after committing crime to join the construction and to continue it in the future? Nonsense).

The companies even put a safety board near the construction site. Is it for being conscious of the visit by the members of the Truth Investigation committee on the Jeju naval base construction, National Assembly? The navy and companies have been employing lots of tricks to evade laws.

On such holiday, about seven navy-contact service company workers were discovered to attempt to hideously relocate one species of Sesarma intermedium that is called as the ‘Boolgeunbalmalttongge’(translated as ‘red feet crab’), the 2nd class endangered species (defined by the Ministry of Environment, ROK), inhibiting in the very construction site to the Yackcheon Buddhist temple. (To more on it, see HERE and HERE)

It was at least third time that those workers were found in the site. The villagers and people expelled them again. They returned back to the naval field office. People are continuously watching that move.

In the Gangjeong tent nearby the naval base field office, people also continued vigil. Recently a person living in the Island supported the protestors with his coffee. Music is another form of protest. It is told that a strange drunken man was threatening the people nearby the tent with a knife for a short time during the day. Who is he?

The navy has used a strategy to divide among the villagers and between the villagers and activists, sometimes employing the villagers in favor of naval base. However, most villagers who are in opposition of naval base and much appreciate activist’ efforts have been recently resurrecting to save their village. Shin Ku Bum, a former Island governor, who has had 10 day's solidarity fast along with Yang Yoon-Mo also visited the village to encourage people.
